First of all, I'm not a Christian or have a formal religion for any matter. However, I've been waiting to eat one of my all time favorite pub foods Fish & Chips today on Good Friday. It's normally the busiest day of the year for fish and chips shop owners worldwide because of this holiday.

I used to eat F&C (malt vinegar and salt) all the time, especially at one of favorite places which used to do an interior wrap with white paper and then the exterior wrapping would be good old fashioned newspaper. However, now that I'm getting older and have to eat a more healthy diet, I've had to limit my visits to the F&C shops.

Who else is going to grab some friggin' greasy and unhealthy Fish & Chips today? :D

They have done a study in the US that people who eat fish finger often have a higher rate of cancer.

- Fish fingers are made with mechanically de-boned fish particles which in itself is not bad for your health, it is the batter and the low quality of oil used to fry the fish fingers that isnot the best for your health.

- People who eat fish fingers very often over cook them and the charred black bits can be carcinogenic.

- Even eating fish and chips made with fish fillets and good batter and fried with clean new oil is not good for you if you eat it too often.

I guess once in a while on good Friday is OK.

If you are worried about health, you don't have to eat the batter, the fish will still taste delicious.

Besides, everyone knows malt vinegar washes away all those ugly calories and other nasty things, so go ahead pig out and be happy :)

I don't think the OP meant "fish fingers" when he brought up F&C. Fish fingers is like Chicken McNuggets; ground up fish/chicken parts formed into a paste and then extruded. That's quite a bit different than actual fish that's then deep fried.

If you've lived in England, you'll have come across Harry Ramsdens.

It's been franchised now (and thereby devalued, I have to say). The original Harry Ramsdens, in Leeds, for a long time held out with the traditional recipe -- which meant deep-fried in lard -- quite delicious -- and good for you, if you only do it on good friday. Served with mushy peas, a plate of bread and butter, cup of tea. They used to have a Large Size on the menu, with the challenge "If you can finish this enormous meal, you win a free dessert! Waitresses in tailored black unifroms. Chap playing the piano. The place itself is like a cathedral, stained glass and all.

Perhaps its just as well air canada don't do flights into Leeds.

Go out instead.

The oil stinks the house up something fierce for weeks!

And the end result is underwhelming as you need so much hot oil on the go to avoid too long hold times. IOW, you can't cook it all fast enough in ahome kitchen to keep everything crispy until serving.

I tried it with two HUGE cast iron dutch ovens on my (actual) commercial stove with huge burners and couldn't keep up with it to keep the product crispy. And like I said, the grease stunk the house up for weeks.
Still sounds like fun, may move it outdoors, but who knows. I could want to deep fry turkey, but nah.

Outdoors is the way to go. I used a turkey fryer and it was great. Just be REALLY careful

Oh, don't I know it. I only use the DFT set up at the base camp on rainy days for gatherings, but 55,000 BTU's requires respect and is nothing to play loose with. No young people allow near the kitchen tent.
