Clorox cleans out BlackBerries in favor of iPhones, Android devices

Apple iPads are growing in popularity among workers, but IT managers are slow to embrace them

Computerworld - SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- When Ralph Loura took over as CIO of Clorox a year ago, the company was standardized on clunky Windows 2000 desktop computers and Blackberry mobile phones.

"Employee satisfaction with the IT team was not great," he said during a keynote speech yesterday at the SNW conference here.

"If you believe demographic studies, the workforce in their 20s and 30s isn't going to accept black corporate PCs with black corporate mobile phones and not be allowed to run Facebook or Angry Bird apps," he said.

Loura was among many CIOs and IT managers at SNW who said they're facing the same issue -- employees want to use mobile technology at work, leaving IT with the job of ensuring that the devices and the data on them remain secure.

For Loura, that meant revamping the company's IT infrastructure while leveraging public and private clouds whenever possible.

The effort to enable a more mobile workforce becomes more a challenge at a company -- like Clorox -- whose 8,300 person workforce is split evenly between "information" workers and plant workers.

Loura so far has replaced 6,000 desktop and tower computers with lightweight HP laptops, and got rid of company-issued Blackberries while letting workers choose between an iPhone or Android or Window Phone 7-powered smartphone. The company has issued 2,000 smartphones, 92% of which are iPhones. About 6% of the smartphones chosen were Android-based while 2% were Windows Phone 7 devices.

Another failure for Apple, riiiiiiiiight.
Those damn fuzzy numbers, and yet another case where Android is taking market share from Apple.

LMAO!!!!!!!
These folks ain't stupid!
It they are FREE and being given away to them, most folks will opt for the most expensive models! After all the company is paying for them! Used to happen at our company all the time. New equipment was issused, we were given a choice and most always selected the most pricey option available since the company was picking up the tab.

You AppleJacks are a trip with they ways you(s) massage the numbers.....

Being a shop floor monkey you of course know all this for a fact. I mean, did they get them for free, as you claim, or did they pay big bucks for them, as you also claim?\

You never did tells what union(s) you work for. That might explain the employes actions.

Pulling a classic Gayass move, claiming both sides of an argument as fact. You haven't done much purchasing for corporations have you, because you clearly know squat? Although that's never stopped you before, so why would anyone be surprised. There must be some purchasing manager/supervisors among the members here.

Try and Pay attention my little cherubic AppleJack!
It was stated the company issued them!..... Capisce???
That kinda implies the corp picked up the tab...unless English is not your first language detective.

This has happened at our Corp many a time and we always selected the most pricey option. Have seen many invoices over the years and usually the price Corps paid is more than you civilian AppleJack rubes pay! Corps get to write these inflated costs off and pass them on to the customers. Guess you never had that experience for the little rinky-dinky outfits who employed you....

You're point is irrelevant, but what else is new, because you again disregard the possibility that MS doe the same purchasing/sales practices, so it doesn't really matter. Clorox obviously felt Apple was a better buy, better product, or both, period.

rather than worry about what manufacturer they bought from, i'd wonder who the i.t. boss will blame when company sensitive info leaks or virii show up. probably there's way more to this story that the pop computer press isn't saying.
