Last summer I got into biking as a form of exercise, I used a gps based app as a bike computer (computed distance, speed, calories) and mapped the ride.

With the delivery of my new Madone (15.7 lb carbon fiber road bike) I've started using ANT+ low power sensors (one built in the frame of the bike for speed/cadence/distance), GPS for mapping and a ANT+ HRM. Purchased an app (digifit) on the apps store that allows me to set custom screens for displaying data, linking with Facebook, training peak, email.... standard sharing - also has cloud data backup and synch with other iOS devices (supports iphones, iPod touch and iPad). To hold the phone, picked up a ANT+ receiver/bike mount from Wahoo fitness that seals the phone from the elements and has a removable bike mount attachment.

Very cool use of all this portable compute power with minimal incremental investment, the competing bike computer (Garmin 800) would cost $450!

Cool bike. How good is the app/iPhone for long distance riding? I like to ride for six hours or more.
I've never ridden that far so I can't answer that, I think if you turned off the GPS you might make it 6 hours. Wahoo is looking to release an add-on battery that would double the capacity ( 8 plus hours of constant use )

It is a cool bike, freaky light and fast.

How fast do you ride when you go that distance, I'm planning on slowing down a bit and going much farther.

I don't focus too much on my speed but I try and average 25 to 30 kph depending on the terrain. Not wicked fast but it's just the style of riding i prefer.

That's still very decent speed, I do find that every couple MPH costs me quite a bit of energy, I could ride 15 MPH forever but at 20 the candle really burns. My summer strategy is to mix them up, a couple of long rides (2-4 hours) and some short :)45-1 hour) fast rides.
