WORCESTER — The arraignment of a strip club employee accused of beating a patron and stealing $300 from him inside a bathroom back in May was postponed to next Tuesday.
Easton Byfield, 35, of Thayer Court, Oxford, did not show up in Central District Court today. His lawyer, Michael P. Murphy, filed a motion asking for the arraignment to be delayed.
Court records show Mr. Byfield's arraignment on charges of kidnapping, assault and battery, unarmed robbery and filing a false crime report was scheduled for tomorrow. His lawyer appeared in court today to request the continuance.
Mr. Murphy had no comment for the throng of reporters at court.
Detectives and members of the Alcohol Enforcement Unit continue to investigate the May 25, 2010, beating of a 25-year-old city man inside Platinum Premier at 241 Southbridge St.
Authorities want to see if the alleged attack and robbery of the patron is an isolated incident. Information also will be sent to the License Commission and representatives of the club will be brought before the commission at a later date for a hearing.
Video of the attack went viral on the Internet, popping up on many different websites. It shows an employee, identified by police as Mr. Byfield, bringing a patron into a bathroom.
The patron was ordered to empty his pockets, then was struck four times by Mr. Byfield, according to police. Another employee took video of the incident. Police received the video and information about the alleged attack last week. On Friday they arrested Mr. Byfield. He posted $7,540 cash bail after the arrest.
The four-and-a-half-minute video shows Mr. Byfield, listed in court records as 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 260 pounds, punching the patron then ordering him to his knees. The patron was told to recite, “Oh great (expletive) brown dude. Oh great (expletive) brown dude.”
Mr. Byfield alleged took $300 in cash from the patron before employees escorted him out of the club. The victim did not report the assault to police and feared for his safety, authorities said.
Mr. Byfield reported to police on the day of the alleged assault that he was actually attacked by the victim. That report is how police tracked down the patron shown in the video.
