really? I always thought he was a man's man, I guess I was right, sort of.
He doesn't really like to advertise it, but apparently everybody in the industry has known forever, and at least once an interviewer asked him directly and he confirmed it.

Easy there little one.

I've worked and/or traveled in every continent except for Antarctica.

Perhaps you're just being the typical "Smug Canadian", can dish it out but can't take it, every criticism results in a standard response... "oh yeah, well in the US....."

If you think banning this song is good policy then defend it.

I don't defend the ban, in fact I wrote to the CSBC and criticized their censorship.

My beef with your response is comparing us to Iran. Easy with the shots chief when you have bigger problems in your own backyard.

I, too, have written the CBSC outlining the fact that the decision breaches both the letter and spirit of the Charter of Rights, Section 2, paragraph B, being:

(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

(emphasis mine)

I urge everyone reading this to write the CBSC at info@cbsc.ca., You may also contact CBSC personnel directly:

Ronald I. Cohen – National Chair
ron.cohen@cbsc.ca

John MacNab – Executive Director
jmacnab@cbsc.ca

Teisha Gaylard – Director of Policy

I think you're being too sensitive, yes I over stated the point to make it (I'm sure I'm the first to do that on TERB.....) the US does many stupid things and I dare say we get our share of criticism for them (wander over to the politics section here where you'll see a Canadian forum almost completely focused on criticizing US policy), it would be a weak minded response to say that no Canadian can take the US to task because Canada banned a Dire Straights song....

You might want to check:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech_laws_in_Canada

Or more specifically section 3 of the Canadian Human Rights Act:

"It is a discriminatory practice for a person or a group of persons acting in concert to communicate telephonically or to cause to be so communicated, repeatedly, in whole or in part by means of the facilities of a telecommunication undertaking within the legislative authority of Parliament, any matter that is likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt by reason of the fact that that person or those persons are identifiable on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination."

Homosexuals are and identifiable group. There is a regulatory mechanism in place. The case in question may be a little silly, and it is, but the Canadian Human Rights act limits speech, and rightly so, IMHO.

The fuss is the ban, it should not be banned, it should merely be reccomended for edit. Peter Gabriels song is not banned.
How much bullshit are you willing to accept? Should you ban family guy or the simpsons? How about edit them even?

Support democracy and freedom rather than narrow minded trends that limit you.
It isn't banned, the CBSC is a voluntary association of private broadcasters. They've simply decided that the song cannot be aired by member stations with the offending word in it. You can still buy it on CD or itunes all you want, in its unedited glory. This has nothing to do with censorship and is anyone's enjoyment of the song going to be compromised because "faggot" isn't in it? I didn't even know it was in the lyrics until yesterday.

There's apparently been a radio edit for a long time that doesn't have the "faggot" references. In fact the reason I never noticed the "faggot" bit is because I have this song on a compilation CD of 80's music and I now know it's an edited version.
