Just wondering for someone who is not a hardcore gamer. Might pick up a system for Christmas.

I'm not a hardcore gamer at all and got a PS3 with only one game and that's it.
It's not bad (PS3), it has the BluRay option which is one of the reasons I got it. I do plan on getting GT5 though and letting my friend play the game out for me so he can finish the game and I can have access to all the cars. =D lol

PS - I can't stand Sony as a company so yeah...

It really depends on what kind of games you are into. I believe the Wii was the best seller when it came out because it was family friendly and popular with casual games. XBox 360 has over taken in sales the last few years. I think most hard core gamers prefer XBox for the exclusive games like Halo. Kinect for the XBox could be a game changer. PS3 is good for watching movies.

For "serious" gaming (hard core or just HD) there are two options, XBox 360 and PS3.

XBox was released first and for a few years had a much better collection of games. It also has Halo, which is a cool game. The on-line gaming experience is better on XBOX but you have to pay for it. Kinetic was just released (image based game control).

PS3 is technically a superior platform, it's built in Blu Ray player allows game makers to build massive games, and you can play DVD and Bluray movies (including 3D if/when that becomes relevant). The biggest advantage the PS3 has is that every unit has a HDD drive, what that means is that game developers can depend on it as opposed to having to design their game performance for a system (XBOX) that may or may not have a HDD. Another nice advantage is the bluetooth controllers and remots and now the MOVE system (optical version of the WII remote). Sony has many exclusive games such as Metal Gear Solid, Ratchet and Clank, Grand Tourismo....

As you can tell I'm more of a PS3 guy, it's rock solid (google red ring of death for xbox), is the best movie player you'll ever own and the best selling serious (ie not Wii) game platform.... I own 2.

Right now Xbox 360 has a much better entertainment platform ie Netflix, Kinetc and various other movie and web content capabilities. PS3 has blue Ray. Really at the moment other than a few console exclusive games ie Halo there isn't much of a true difference as the majority of the games come out on both of them. I have both and depending on what i want to do; blue ray movies, games, netflix, I will use either one. Of note, i have replaced, under warranty, my Xbox 360 3 times as it has failed with the red ring of death but my PS3 is still working great.

You should figure out first what you want to do with the system other than games and then look at the features etc to decide. My opinion right now is Xbox as there seems to be more development around it becoming a home entertainment centre on top of gaming system.

Good luck and happy gaming!

It's worth noting you can do netflix on all game platforms (PS3, Wii, Xbox).

Actually my experience is the Apple TV version of Netflix has the best UI bit its (not yet) a game platform.

My son's PS3 died 9 months after the warranty expired.
He had to buy another one. He likes PS3 best still.

PS3 is good. The weak link is the DVD player. It is a generic player, and there are instructions as how to replace it. It's easy. I thought that that was a good idea, so I bought one.
I play NHL 11, Killzone2, and Grand Tursimo 5. All great games, and the controller shakes to simulate action. I can play movies, surf the web, store pictures, play games, and I am still learning. I bought the move package for $399. More than my little notebook.
