Canada's parliament will not be asked to vote on whether to extend a military mission in Afghanistan, which is scheduled to end next year, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said.

Mr Harper said on Thursday he would "reluctantly" deploy military trainers until 2014 to help Afghan forces.

And the Afghans will 'reluctantly' take training. They're beyond our help. Leave 'em to the Taliban and bring our boys home NOW.

Just realistic. 9 years of war and western help and they can still barely do anything for themselves. It's hopeless, and keeping our soldiers there is a political stunt that won't make a difference.

We and the US won't be there forever, and the Taliban can wait us out, so we might as well accept it and move on.

But it will be a moral victory. We will have held on there longer than the soviets.

I'm not sure what this sort of comment says about you. Perhaps you are beyond help? Whats for sure is you've given up.

They are a different people, different ideas and idealogies, beliefs, mindsets if you will. Trying to literally jam them into what north america wants won't work, it never has worked. The USA typically only makes a mess and then leaves. Change takes many generations. Read some history, follow how the british commonwealth was formed, OR spew nonsense like "they are beyond help" because you are incapable of helping.
Hey Northpole. I appreciate the lecture and condescending tone. You're very wise. Thanks. I'm not talking about the Afghan people as a whole, I'm talking about their security forces. Totally useless (except for a few). They can't (won't?) stop the Taliban even though they know who they are, and our army teaching how we do business is a waste of time.

Afghanistan needs an Afghan solution, not Canadian.

Politically, the fiction is that our troops need to be there, so Harper will placate the americans while pandering to the Canadian public's need to feel good that our soldiers aren't hurting people, they're just training and helping!

Bullshit. We're not placating the U.S. Frankly getting tired of this uneducated drivel being thrown around. We're assisting in a NATO mission. Leaving entirely would be irresponsible given the sacrifice already made. I have zero difficulty with a training mission and a training committment doesn't need Parliamentary approval.

This is actually a Liberal plan little lefrie bobby Ray came back from a fact finding mission last summer and came up with this.
It is something that needs to be done, we are very good at it and the Afghan army is based on the British model from way back, so there will be fewer issues, ( every little bit helps)
The combat losses should drop and we can get the armour and artillery home, leaving a battalion or so to train the Afghans. It needs to be done if the Afghans are going to half half a chance when we do finally leave.
