I am very surprised that this is legal. Even though they are owned by municipal governments, municipal governments still fall under provincial authority under the constitution.

Here's the Globe version of the story.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...ntario-liberal-party-ndp-says/article1781414/

Essentially, the public utilities bought tickets to fundraising dinners for networking purposes. Ontario laws still require a disclosure that this is considering a "donation", but it can also be rationalized as a business expense, eg. a public utility networks with politicians.

Is this corruption or good business? It's fully disclosed....I suppose someone else could have bought the tickets and the execs still go for networking purposes. I'm not too fussed about this.

While legal...

...I am doubtful that a BUSINESS case can be made for it!!!

Networking? I can see it in the private sector...but SHEESH...its hydro......is there that much competition that you need to get in and go to dinners, and play golf to 'close the deal'

Huge business case....this is the government that makes policy on a regulated industry. In fact, they have to be careful that there isn't influence peddling, but makes lost of sense to sit down with those who make the rules that govern your business.

We had our local hydro provider donate 6 figures to the new hospital construction. It is not the hydro corps money it is the towns and through them the residents. This is the same as the hospitals hiring lobbyests to lobby the provincial govt. It should not happen, it does and it is happening with all three parties in Ontario. Up till now it is legal for incorporated companies to donate to political parties, this is a loophole that should be closed.

This is not unlike the corporate world..travelling to Vegas for meetings...or taking a client out on the golf course for business....All on the company (customers) dime. All written off as a business expense!!!! Yah Right!!!!

Something I HAVE LONG NOT agreed with.

Why should the employee get to eat and golf...as a tax break...or business expense.

If REV. Canada would close this loophole for all....get the meetings back in the BOARDROOM!!!!

EXPENSES GO DOWN.....PRODUCT COSTS GO DOWN!!!

No different for lobbying!!!

Remember, when a liberal does something like this its within the law, if a conservative had done it, the liberals would be up in arms. Do as I say, not as I do! what a bunch of hypocrites

So you're with the NDP, the party that raised this issue? What does Hudak have to say about it?

Hudak and the NDP leader both say it is not a great idea but it is at present legal , and all three of the parties recieved donations from this source, the liberals recieved more probably due to the fact that they are in power
