The Canadian and Australian Regiments were considered the shock troops of the British Army in the First World War, something to be proud of.
Yup, us Canadians and Australians are a much tougher breed than the pampered British schoolboys. Also, virtually every Canadian and Australian boy at the age of 8 could shoot a squirrel from a distance of 100 yards. Oh no, now the squirrel lobby will be on my back.

Then again the U.S. has had its own military even before there was a State (shared only with the PRC and that in some ways is a quite different situation) that was not at all the situation in Canada where as you doubtless know British Regulars served as the backbone of the armed forces until the early 20th Century (and the Royal Navy really even longer than that).
That may well be the historical reason why the US is more militaristic than Canada. All I know that since I've been alive the US has been a far more warlike society, and probably for some considerable time before that--maybe as you say going right back to the beginning.

In any case I think the warlike nature of the US is why you have a national holiday to celebrate your armed forces.

It is strange considering that the U.S. fought tooth and nail to try and stay out of WW I and WW II. On the other hand, the Americans are definitely patriotic (ever notice how many fly the flag outside their home?) and serving is consider an honour.

I judge that Canadians are far more patriotic than Americans, and I think Canadians are more likely to fly the flag than Americans are. However, Americans confuse patriotism with militarism and associate patriotism with cheering on the army. In Canada patriotism is more properly expressed as pride in the nation.

Put a Canadian in a room with an American and let the American say something that could in any way be considered the slightest insult against Canada and watch the patriotism flow. Most Canadians simply won't stand for it, and will HAVE to say something.

Sometimes Fuji, the shite that spews from your mouth is amazing. Is there anything you can back this statement up with? I don't remember the last time I heard an American talk about separating, aside from maybe those nitrate sniffing militia whackos. I always know when I'm traveling in the US. There are flags everywhere.
i say a lot of negative things about the US and even some citizens, but a a group there isn't another country whose citizenry is more patriotic, almost to a blind dumb fault.

OK, excluding Quebec. Or maybe not--the Quebecois are extremely patriotic too, but for a different concept of nation.

I stand by my statement: Canadians are on the whole far more patriotic than Americans. We just don't express it in military oriented ways.

You can't exclude Quebec. You forgot BC, Alberta and coming soon to your tele, Newfoundland.

When was the last time you saw a roomful of Canadian sing the national anthem from beginning to end? Too may Canadians don't know the words. That's a simple example.

I see a lot of Canadian flags flying pretty proudly when I'm in BC and Alberta. And you can include Quebec and certainly Newfoundland if you recognize WHAT they're patriotic towards. Go to a pub in St. Johns and start dissing Newfoundland, tell me how it goes. Have you SEEN the celebrations in Quebec on St. John de Baptiste day? And you think those guys aren't patriotic Quebecers?

Done it and lived to tell the tale, with no permanent scars. I've got Newfies in the family and I make as much fun of me and mine from away and never once got a Blue Star upside the head.

When you learn half of it in one language and the other half of it in another language, it can be tres confusing at times :)

Where do they do that? I learned it in english and the picked up the french later. They don't sing it in both language at the Leafs games. A lot of it has to do with it nor being part of the school day program, too political.

Indeed spoken like someone from the Golden Horseshoe.

Nothing much has changed in the over three decades since the famous Mcleans survey which showed that the GHS was the only area of Canada where people identify first as Canadians rather than Albertans or Nova Scotians etc. . . Certainly my experience is that this is still entirely the case. Be honest Fuji, frankly one sees many more Canadian flags outside homes or businesses in the GHS than in the rest of the Country and perhaps unsurprisingly fewer provincial flags.

In fairness both Canada and the U.S. have this problem. I blame it in large measure on the development over the past forty or so years of a performer singing the National Anthem at sporting events. Practice makes perfect and it used to be that at almost any sporting event the entire audience sang the National Anthem.

The closer you get to the American Border, the more Canadian flags you will see.

Is it my impression or am I not seeing that many people wearing a red poppy?
Ya, It's your impression. Stop spending all that time in SCs. There's no place to pin them on half the people there.
I don't know if it's the cause, but over the last few years, it's become harder and harder to find a place to buy one...
It's on cp24 today, 1 in 10 with poppies, in some places 1 in 15 seen.

I didn't hear the news, just read it so I'm not sure about details.

Well, is 1 in 10 good or bad. I see Legionnaires and cadets all over the place selling them and on the cenotaph on the day the surface is covered more and more now. I've been going to the same service every year for the last 12 years, save one. The good news is that young children are placing them as well.

Much greater celebration of war and more cheering for the army.
True but mainly the cheering and carping is done by members on the right!
Most of which have NEVER worn the uniform....

Sometimes Woodrow, you prove to the membership that you are truly an idiot and this is one of the times. STFU!!

There no way of knowing who in the crowd are conservative and who are not when you attend a ceremony at a cenotaph, except for the famous in the reviewing. I doubt we'll see many Teabagger placards with their usual dumb quotes. That would make it too easy for you.
