RAR is just a compressed file , breaks down the file into chunks. use program like winrar or others to extract it.

Correct.
Have it set up in Linux to seamlessly extract RAR files to mp3.
It does this easier with Linux than with Windows....

OMG,I am so lost.So you download a program to extract compressed files? Is it a plug in?
Winrar is a small free separate program needed to extract compressed files. Winrar is replacing Winzip which is widely used to unzip compressed files.

Ok, here's one for ya..... I'm using Phex right now to DL some music and one of the bennifits of Phex is that it tells you what country the file is coming from and what P2P Client software the uploader is using. Now according to my DL screen the file I'm DL'ing is coming from the US from an uploader who is using Limewire. I thought Limewire was shut down. Now is it possible that there are other servers in the US or elsewhere that are still using Limewire other than the main one that the US gov. shut down? And if so is it possible to get your Limewire software to connect to these servers directly instead of the one that was shut down?

From Wiki:
LimeWire 5.5.11 and newer have been disabled using a backdoor installed by the company. However, version 5.5.10 and all prior versions of LimeWire remain fully functional and cannot be disabled unless a user upgrades to one of the newer versions.

I just Dl'd an older version of limewire (5.5.4), installed it and when I start the prog. I still get the legal notice that says Limewire has been shut down by court order. I tried to do a search for MP3's and all it says is that it's trying to connect. Under the tools menu / options / advanced tools, there are no hosts listed to connect to. Looks like they may have shut down all versions of the Limewire P2P software. The story I've posted a hotlink to below says that they're going to have a free trial version of a new Limewire prog. ready to DL sometime in January.

LimeWire uses the gnutella network.
Shutting down LimeWire is easier than shutting down a worldwide network like gnutella.

That's true. I used to download movies off torrent sites because it was so much more convenient than any of the legal alternatives. Now there's netflix and I haven't downloaded another illegal move since--I'm a happy paying customer. I wish there were more selection, but I can find enough content to watch.

The same is basically true of music right now--there is no good convenient way to access the content legally. The industry has its head stuck so far up its own ass that even if you wanted to be an honest paying customer they make it inconvenient.

I suspect that almost everyone feels like I do: We WANT to be honest paying customers but we're not given any convenient way to do that.

If it isn't illegal to borrow from the library, then why is p2p illegal?
Good point.

It's illegal because of all the endless carping done by the greedy folks the RIAA shills for.

Had a buddy who used to get all the classic movies and music he wanted from the library, then copy it to disc with his PC. Now he does the same with Netflix for newer stuff. He says it better than torrents and faster.

Rhapsody (All the music you want. $10 a month) and Napster are pretty easy to use for music. I got a free year of Napster (database of ~6 million tunes) with my new PC and liked it a lot.....then Napster did and 'upgrade' and farked up the search function a bit. Still Napster ain't that bad.

Audiogalaxy my old ATF p2p is trying something new. Audiogalaxy has a beta new cloud music player puts all your music and playlists at your fingertips from any computer or mobile phone.
No syncing, no copying, no uploading.
Just streaming.

iTunes is the best out right now.
Largest retailer of music in North America, no copy protection any more, good deal for artists and lots of content (not to mention ok movie rental).

Just recieved this one from a friend who is a self described computer brainiac.http://downloads.phpnuke.org/en/download-item-view-y-y-g-b-z/ARES.htm :for all of you who are as far behind as I am with such things.
I DL'd Ares last night just to give it a try and as far as I'm concerned after using the program for just one night the amount of DL sources that Ares has over other P2P programs beats all the others hands down! When searching for something common like Pink Floyd on Limewire I was lucky to have maybe something like 50 or 60 DL sources. With Ares I had over 750 sources! Also, I have been looking for certain MP3's for a while now and I was just about to break down and buy them from Itunes as Limewire and the other P2P progs. that I've tried didn't have ANY DL sources period..... With Ares I had over 350 souces for those MP3's and got everything I was looking for. I've also been looking for an old black and white sci-fi flick from 1958 called Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (korny I know but what the hey) anyhoo.... no luck on Limewire or any other P2P's but with Ares there was 7 DL sources and I got over half the flick last night as well.
For those worried about viruses, what I do is to save all my DL's in one folder then before I play them or move them to another folder I use my Norton Pro antivirus to scan the folder as a whole. If there are any viruses Norton will find them and either quarantine the file or ask me if I want to delete them. I've never had any problem with viruses from P2P progs.

This is either laziness, or lying. There are easily tens of quality sources, whether you want physical media, high rez downloads, download to mobile devices, etc. Prices are at an all time low (thanks to downloading :).

People download because it is free, it is convenient, and in general they do not care about quality. It is hard for any legal product to compete with free.

You have to watch the quality of music from youtube, I've converted some that I couldn't find from my usual source and they turned out to be crappy 64 bitrate instead of the minimum 128 I prefer.

YouTube sound quality is down. Posted this on another thread.

YouTube is NOT as good as a year ago.

YouTube sound quality and content has been severely cut back probably by demands by RIAA weasels. Over a year ago YouTube was becoming another Napster. You could find great quality audio files on ANY artist you desired, then download the file and rip the audio to mp3 or whatever you desired. I know. I found a couple old tunes awhile back, I had been searching for for years on YouTube that couldn't be found anywhere else. Think this rattled the RIAA and they decided to force YouTube to remove tens of thousands of good quality audio clips while leaving the poorer sound quality clips alone. Some artists like Bob Dylan, Elvis and a few others have been just about completely removed from YouTube. However those artists along with their entire discography are still available on newsgroups.

Not true. Take any Youtube URL and type &fmt=18 at the end of it, refresh and you get stereo quality. Then on top of that click 'high quality' at the link I posted earlier.
