I like Montreal too. And Quebec truth be told as I've worked there on hundreds of occasions. BUT, Montreal will never regain the title.
In a way, I feel sorry for Montreal, because as a town goes - they've never really bought into the Separatist Bullshit (and it is Bullshit) like the rest of Quebec. In both referendums, Montreal has been solidly Federalist. I think Levesque and the rest of the subsequent Biggots - especially Perizeau knew that and as a result, they didn't give a Flying FUCK about Montreal. Montreal was simply grist for the mill as far as they were concerned (given that they could never win in Montreal anyway.) Levesque and his ilk were completely thrilled to gut Montreal. Loose 300,000 of the population to Toronto, loose all the Head Offices, but that's 300,000 solid NO votes driving down the 401, not yes votes.
What would be interesting is Quebec Partition. What would happen if Quebec ever got their 50% + 1 vote, but then Montreal said, "hey, wait, we're taking our ball and joining Canada thanks" You want to get a Separatist all riled up? Just bring up partitiion.

Although I know a couple of moderately funny stories of Russian born wives and their desire to offer the same.
