Yoko Ono and EMI partner to honour John Lennon's 70th birthday
by Elizabeth Bromstein on Oct 8, 2010 6 Comments

Saturday, October 9, would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday. In honour of that Yoko Ono and EMI Music have partnered with YouTube for global tributes honoring the music legend and former Beatle.

YouTube is honouring Lennon with a homepage spotlight starting at 9pm PT on Friday, October 8th and staying active for 24 hours.

Video testimonials from many of Lennon’s famous friends and fans, including Aerosmith, Bret Michaels, Brian Wilson, David Gray, DMC (Run-DMC) Jeff Bridges, the Jonas Brothers, Ringo Starr and Tony Hawk will be included in YouTube's homepage spotlight.

"I hope you’ll join me and a family of peace around the world to celebrate this very special day,” said Yoko in a statement. "Send in your own video tribute to YouTube, and we will share in keeping John’s memory alive."

Ono and EMI are also releasing the global John Lennon "Gimme Some Truth" catalogue campaign.

"Featured in the sweeping initiative are eight remastered John Lennon solo albums and new titles including Double Fantasy Stripped Down, Power To The People: The Hits, Gimme Some Truth, and the John Lennon Signature Box."

This is the first time Lennon's classic solo albums and other standout recordings have been digitally remastered from his original mixes.

The deluxe 11CD and digital John Lennon Signature Box includes 13 previously unreleased home recordings, and Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, and Julian Lennon have each written personal essays for the lavish collection.

Now, let's remember John Lennon with some videos.

Actually, the four of them changed and influenced society. They had a profound effect on a vast segment of the population and as such, with all due respect to you, those that were affected by them deserve to be able to commemorate at certain times. This is one of those times.

i don't like him or dislike him. i just don't get it. they were just people who made music. good music but that's all it was, music. how can that affect anyone?
True, they made music and it made them famous. But they were more than that. They represented a new lifestyle, a new way to look at the world, being able to grow your hair long, bucking the establishment etc. As I alluded to above, they were not just music, they were the face of a new generation.

If you can accept that so very many people were influenced by them (which is obviously the case), it should not be hard to appreciate that maybe there was something more than just the music and even if an individual doesn't feel it themself, it doesn't mean everybody else is wrong. It was one of those "you had to be there".

I hope that all the media outlets remember the unwritten rule of not focusing on Chapman (as he did the deed for fame), though one scummy network did.

No he may not. He is an American citizen with a criminal record so I doubt he would be allowed to enter Canada.
Now as I said he served his time so he should be released without parole, if that is what you were referring to.

i don't like him or dislike him. i just don't get it. the same way i don't get people who visit michael jackson's grave and cry or who visit elvis' grave. they were just people who made music. good music but that's all it was, music. how can that affect anyone? anyways i'll create a new thread for that discussion.
I could not agree more.

[size=+2]Make you a fair trade: Chapman gets released when we get a new CD of original Lennon material.

Fair enough?

Good music but that's all it was, music. How can that affect anyone?
Indeed, I am not at all touched when an athlete sings along to his national anthem as he receives his medal.

When the Haiti earthquake victims sang 'Amazing Grace' in the candle light to give themselves a little hope.

When I see a Mother sing in order to comfort her child.

Music. How can that affect anyone? Pshaw!!

For many of us, the Beatles were a part of our lives growing up. I remember as a toddler watching them on the Ed Sullivan Show. Then as I grew and changed, so did they and their music, which brought to light some of the current issues of the day. Just like Elvis, you grow up with these great memories, and when such an icon dies, it's like part of your life dies. I'll never forget what a bombshell babe (& music lover) I dated many moons a go would repeatedly say, especially during the time that she was separated from her ex, that 'music is your best friend'. I remember one headline when Lennon died that read, "When the Music Died' or something like that. That's the way it hit us. Like your friend died.

I feel the same way. It's not like he found a cure for cancer or something.

Waddya talkin about? Did you live in a vacuum? Even J. Edgar Hoover had a file on Lennon because he felt he was a threat, but the only thing Lennon did was become a social activist through his music.

God I love this song, lol. ;) One of the things Lennon doesn't believe in this song is Kennedy's, but he does believe in himself. Ironically after JFK's death in '63, the Beatles came to America in '64, and uplifted the spirits of a nation in sorrow with their music.
