I've never been attacked by a large snake, so I have to ask. Has there ever been a situation where a guy gets taken down by a snake but is able to pull out his pocket knife and kill the snake before it kills him?
Is this harder in reality than it seems? I always think that if a snake like that started eating my leg I could just reach into my pocket, grab my knife (who walks around in jungles without knives and guns?) and start sawing it's head off. Problem solved.

The English TV survivor-guy is snake-obsessed and talks about them frequently. He narrated this unpleasant story about how a guy in the jungle went to sleep in a hammock and left his arm dangling. A boa thought it was juicy and swallowed it. The guy's buddies came back and found the guy's arm stuck 3 feet into the snake's gut. They offed the boa and hacked its mouth open and then PEELED the snake's body off the guy's arm.
The guys arm was - according to the story - just a lump of withered useless flesh by this time, because the snake's acidic digestive juices had completely wrecked it.
It was a distasteful narrative.

That is a very strange video.
Snakes generally kill and then swallow head first.
Trying to eat someone alive by the leg doesn't make sense because of the risk of being attacked and the fact that the snake can't swallow the whole body like that nor does it have the teeth to bite the leg off.

I think it's most likely that snake was already dead and the dude just stuck his leg into it. It's not an anaconda, it's a reticulated python. You can tell the snake was already dead because it was limp and deflated, lacking any strength that even a starving snake of that size would have. Constrictor snakes do not begin to eat unless they are certain their prey is dead and they also understand size so it wouldn't have been even trying to eat prey in a hole like that as there would have been no room to constrict and kill him. Snakes take a while to eat, it wouldn't have gotten that far up his leg without ample time time to remove it and the snake wouldn't keep swallowing if the guy was moving. Also, there were no wounds on his leg nor blood and there would have been lots. To top it off, the snake didn't bleed when they cut into it, dead things do not bleed.

I think that this wasn't an accident, but a hunting technique to get a snake that's down a hole.

Exactly. That's how they catch them. Snakes don't like humans and even human scent is disgusting for them. All these "snake eats man" stories are mostly bullshit. A snake can't even swallow a man due to the broad shoulders. Humans should fear venomous snakes not these ones that swallow whole. They want nothing to do with humans. A boa just doesn't happen on an arm and starts swallowing it.
