What is so bad about slipping some sleeping pills into your dogs food and ending it's life with carbon monoxide while it is asleep? Frankly, holding it down while the family is in tears and the vet injects it is far more traumatic to the poor animal. Plus you have to explain to your kids why daddy had to call a man to kill the family pet... my way the dog died in its sleep... everyone wins. (except Rubemeister... hes out $50)

I might add that part of the deal when having a pet is that some day you are going to have to deal with their death.
This is not a time to be trying to save a few bucks by attempting home euthanasia.
Your pet deserves the respect of as a painless and comfortable passing as possible.
Leave this to the professionals.

Two observations... First, OP never said what kind of pet. If it's a goldfish, just flush it down the toilet. Second, unless you have a detached garage, running your car in the garage for several hours would probably result in a significant amount of carbon monoxide entering your house... which could be lethal for anyone inside.
i had a dog for about 12 years. a big old newfie dog and it was awesome. she got really sick and needed to be put down. so that morning i cooked her some bacon and put the bacon and the grease all over her kibble and she ate it all up and gave her a handful of treats. we went for a walk to our favorite spot by the river and we went for a swim together and that helped me make up my mind. she got tired swimming and climbed on my back so i could swim her back in to shore. we got back to shore and we laid on the edge of the river and i pet her till she fell asleep. then i just leaned on her and put a lot pf pressure on her throat suffocating her. she never woke up and died after having a a great day. i went home got a shovel and buried her on the edge of the river. her name was farley and she was a great dog, i am happy it was me that put her down instead of a stranger in a cold vet room.
The vet is very humane.
But even less pain is the car in the garage deal. EVEN LESS PAIN.

NO STRESS. NO FUSS.

I think the vet is less stressful to both you and your dog - you can hold and comfort him in his final moments. You can't do that with a shotgun or carbon monoxide. Cars don't emit as much carbon monoxide as in the past, suppose the job is only half done?
Vets are much cheaper in the country and there are many places to bury your animal as well if you choose to save a bit of money.
If the dog is so ill that death is a mercy, you in all likelihood will not be "holding the dog down" but rather merely holding the dog. Hopefully tears do come. People (including children) who can't grieve over the loss of a beloved companion, probably have difficulties with showing emotion in other matters as well.
Some pet insurance companies cover the cost of it. luckly mine have that for when that day comes. you can do a group euthanasia which is cheaper then invidividual.
When we put my dog down five years ago, we had a professional from Toronto Animal Services come to our home. My whole family was there, and my 15-year-old Black Lab went quietly and peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved him so much. He didn't struggle, and he didn't have to be held down. He just closed his eyes and went to sleep forever.
He didn't die in a cold, scary room at the vet's office; he died in his home with his family. We should all be so lucky. <3

Lets face it is clear at this point you are full of rubbish. I doubt any lawn mower would run for 3 hours on 1/2 liter of gas, 3 hours is just a good safety buffer. The lawnmover would probably run for about 20-40 minutes. Neighbours would have no clue what is going on and would most likely mind their own business unless they are morons like you.
Not all animals are that sick, sometimes they have terminal conditinons and will react with instinct with some degree of strength.
HomerJ, since your question asks how would I do it, I'll tell you. I would scrape together the money, give up any frills for a short time and spend the money on a vet coming to my house. Think of the couple hundred dollars as repayment for the years of love and companionship your pet has given to you. Good luck. I'd bury the pet somewhere meaningful and not spend the money on the BS disposal/cremation options. That I gotta wonder about for integrity.
