Just watching some UFC highlight fights and wondered what happened to Brandon Vera (since he was on there beating some guy as usual), so I did a search and thought he disappeared from UFC, but he hasn't. (I'm not a die hard UFC guy, but do keep up and watch it once in awhile)

I saw that Vera lost to Jon Jones and looked up his profile on Wikipedia, DAMN this guy looks like he has a bright future in the UFC.

Beating Vera and a 9-1 record? That isn't too shabby.
Pretty confident guy at the weigh-ins as well. lol

He's one to watch, considering his camp and who he trains with.

Rumour has it that his next opponent will be Forest Griffin at UFC 121.

Geez.... where is the competition? Jones by vicious knock out or GNP in the first round.

I was hopping for Ryan Bader or Rashad Evans(Since Mauricio Rua is out for a while). Yes, "Rashad Evans" and I think that Jones can win.

Jones/Evans would be really interesting, since they both train at Jackson's camp. lol
I'm a fan of Evans, but that would be a good match Kirmit.

Griffin might be a good one as well, since he's one tough SOB (Griffin).

I think that Jones is ready to beat Griffin pretty easily. I don't think toughness really helps against Jones, his strikes are so devastating that a good chin would not help. To beat him would require a high level of skill, to not get into a vulnerable position where Jones can beat on you. Griffin is not highly skilled, so I think he would get beaten. Rashad Evans would be good, or Rua, or Machida. Or perhaps Anderson Silva would move up to LHW and fight him, that would be interesting. Maybe better for Jones to get in a few more fights first.

The 9-1 record is deceptive, the one loss was to Matt Hamill. The fight ended with Hamill unconcious with his face bashed in, Jones was disqualified for using a 12-6 elbow, instead of the more acceptable 11-5 elbow. Rules are rules, but Jones was clearly the better fighter, who lost on a technicality. It is not like the elbow changed the fight, Hamill was already helpless and getting beaten up.

Jones is actually 11-1. I still say that he got robbed against Hamill. The 12-6 elbows did not cause Hamill to be unable to continue. Did you see how Hamill could not move his arm after the fight? That was because his shoulder was dislocated due to the take down. That match should have been AT MOST a no contest. Many matches ends in a no contest due to illegal elbows, knees, poke in the eye. I do not see how the Hamill match is any different.

Then again, MMA is not fair. Remember the Kevin Burns/Anthony Johnson fight? Johnson was CLEARLY winning the fight until he got viciously poked in the eye(he was also poked in the eye several times prior to the stoppage). Instead of disqualifying Burns, Steve Mazzagatti awarded the win to Burns by TKO due to eye poke. Johnson appealed the decision to the Athletic commission and lost due to "lack of remedy". I still do not understand the "lack of remedy" part. A remedy would be to declare the fight a no contest.

I gotta watch the Hamill fight but I did see highlights of the Vera fight last night and holy shit this kid is one confident SOB and his elbows and take-downs are incredible.
I think Griffin may actually be in trouble, as is Machida (I predict a knockout with Machida, if there ever is a fight with Machida).

He apparently broke 3 bones in Vera's face? WTF? lol

Spinning elbow against Bonner who pounded it out with Griffin in that now infamous 5 round fight 10 years ago.

Here's the weigh-in face-off with Vera. Skip to 0:51 to the meat of it.

Yes, Jones' record is impressive. According to this, he is only ranked #15 in the light heavy weight division. http://www.fightmatrix.com/mma-ranks/light-heavyweight-185-205-lbs/

Vera is ranked #23 and is only 3-5-0 in the last 3 years. So I guess Jones beating Vera is not that impressive.

And speaking of rankings, is there a consensus choice on the most legit ranking?
Maybe not that impressive by numbers, but the fashion he did it in, to Vera himself, THAT was impressive.

For some reason, I thought it was around 9/11 time or so.
Too lazy to google that tiny bit of info. Meanwhile, I dug up on Jones, go figure. lol
Regardless, great fight and it felt like forever.

Vera was always overrated. Enough on that.
Jon Jones is a Dana White favorite right now so he'll get a big push especially with all the non-Americans in his division.
Don't get me wrong I think he's good.
If he fights Forrest I think he loses and right now Jones has no chance against the top guys in the div - Rua, Machida, Thiago, Rampage, Evans, etc.
He needs to KO a few more Baders and Soszynskis before he moves up more.
What is really obscene is that the UFC currently ranks Randy Couture as the light heavy #1 contender. When I saw that I had a "whaaaaat" moment.
FYI, they have Jones ranked at number 5.
The guys I think are up and movers in the div right now are Cyrille Diabate and Ricardo Romero.
