Just signed on to terb and was surprised not to see a shit load of talk about this. Kris Versteeg and another dude to Leafs for Viktor Stalberg, Paradis and Didomenico. Burke pulls off a great trade setting up what could be an interesting day tomorrow. Im liking it

Versteeg is a good player...but both Stalberg and Didomenico have the potential to be similar players in the near future. So im kind of 50/50 on the deal. Versteeg thrived on a good team, we'll see what happens in Toronto, and until then im not going to pass any judgment.

Just another 3rd or 4th liner on any other teams.
as long as we get better players than we have , that means we are improving, we have to start somewhere. Remember stanley cup champions have 4 line players to, you need this because their salaries are low because your star make the big money .So this is a good deal

Whatever.
With this type of attitude the Leafs are going no where.
To win in sports you needs stars. You need leaders. The Leafs have neither at this point. Add all the Versteegs you want. It won't matter.

I always like Stalberg, mostly because he seemed to come out of nowhere & appeared to be a steal . Loved his speed & size, even though he never used his size to his advantage. However, he hasn't been the same player since the concussions. As for DiDomineco, i'm not sure he'll ever play in the NHL. Same with Philip Paradis, who'd be a 4th liner at best if he ever made it to the big team.

Versteeg will be a top 6 forward on a Leafs team short of offensive punch. Versteeg had to play a more defensive role on a stacked Hawks team and likely would have scored 30 goals on most of the other NHL teams if he would have played on the first two lines. The Leafs didn't lose much & gain a player who's already a proven NHLer and well-regarded around the league. The other guy that they got in the trade (Sweatt) could be a sleeper & we might wind up raving about him in a year or two....just like some people raved about Stalberg when he first came up with the Leafs.

So what are Kessel & Phaneuf? Give the Leafs some slack. They're on the right path & they were a completely different team once the trades were made for Phaneuf in Calgary & Giguere in Anaheim. The Flyers & the Habs weren't much better than they were and look how far they went.....

so now maybe we can trade Grabowski and garbage to Boston for Savard??
Boston is desperate to get rid of Savard's contract. You probably could have him for a roll of tape & a jock strap right now. But most teams are weary of his contract & past concussion problems. A team that would want to take him off Boston's hands would likely request that Boston take on some of that team's own excess contracts.

The only way it happens between the Leafs & the Bruins is if the Bruins agree to take on a contract or two....like either Jeff Finger or Mikael Grabovski. However, i don't they'd want Grabovski since they're already stacked at center.

I would agree with the above statement. Also, Versteeg is only 24 so he is young enough to still have upside potential. The three guys the Leafs gave up never scored 20 goals in an NHL season and never might.

Question: Is it true that Mike van Ryn has retired?

I don't think van Ryan has officially retired but he will soon! This is a good move by the leafs and I'm a habs fan!!! I respect what Toronto is doing here and Savard can still come over for nothing. The old rumour of Jordan staal for kaberle and kulemin are probably dead now that pens got a defenseman.

He did announce he won't play next season due to his chronic knee problems. My guess is that they might eventually lead to his retirement. However, i haven't heard anything about official retirement.

I do like the Colby Armstrong signing for $3 million per season for 3 years. Burke's type of player!

He's a character guy that can play & loved by his teammates wherever he's played.

Not quite nothing, more like $50million.
Math not your strong suit, Rocky ?

Marc Savard has 7 years left on his contract, @ $4,007,143 per season. Total remaining = $28,050,000 .

Correction "nothing" as in giving up players of value. The leafs have the money to spend on Savard but he is a risk health wise.

you can't be happy that this is all there is... Versteeg is a bottom 6 player, not top 6. I think Stalberg is already as good as Versteeg.

Ooops! I misread guyroch's post. I thought it was 7 years at $7million a year. Where did the $7million come from?
His salary is $7 M , $7 M , $6.5 M , $5 M , $1.5 M , $.5 M , $.5 M for each of the next 7 years respectively, his cap hit is much more easily absorbed ($4,007,143 per season).
