A very sad story. I don't think the thread is named properly. Yes, human trafficking does exist in Canada. Its nice to see "the system" coming to the aid of this vulnerable lady.

This is a tragic story. She seems to have been a deeply troubled young woman (and likely still is).

I am troubled, however, by the trafficking charge (withdrawn) against Marlo Williams, indeed he committed criminal activity and should serve a significant sentence for what he did. But was it trafficking rather than assault and theft?

The trafficking charge was withdrawn on a plea deal but if the story is as described yes it's trafficking in that he forced and intimidated her to provide sexual services. Since he made a deal for a lesser charge we'll never know.

Among my problems with it Fuji are that if the Criminal Code fails to require any element of recruitment, or of transportation there is a disconnect with the generally excepted definitions of Trafficking in Persons.

Further, is Stripping a "Sexual Service?" That does seem a rather slippery slope to start down just like "Visual Sexual Agression." Such laws have good intents, but they have real potential for abuse. For instance is living off the avails to be amended to include stripping logically from the above seemingly it should be.

It's sad, you know someone else will rope her into the business.
She was doomed before she was born, a lot of blame belongs to her mother for drinking while pregnant yet she was probably a victim as well.

Edmonton ain't exactly the safest city in the country for a young, broke, vulnerable girl.......

You have no idea sir.If anyone cares to, they can research how many lawsuits are pending against the Alberta goverment for absolute neglect .During"the Boom" out here they hired some of the most unqualifed people you could ever imagine being put into a position of social work.

The goverment is not innocent either.....the first cuts are always to social services.....I've been living here for 7 years and as a volunteer the things I have personally seen that were not dealt with just sickened me.I rarely volunteer here anymore for that simple reason.

Certainly not news...tons of white girls are forced into Strip Clubs and Street Action by Black pimps. These predators are impossible to stop, and I bet you if you tried to intervene between a girl and her black pimp, she would take his side 99% of the time. Until society stops glamorizing the "thug" life portrayed by blacks, this will continue to happen.

Black pimp? You mean the popular boyfriend who have a lot of ladies?

I once saw an MPA who has a pimp. She was in her early 20. She is a real hottie too, and she opened up to me about her life and her childhood. As sad as it is, I found out that the best thing that ever happened for her is her "boyfriend". She kept saying how popular he is, and she doesn't mind letting him see other girls, but I know she could do better.

I know that a very large number (most?) of SPs certainly those here on TERB and MERB are not in this situation. Still it gives one pause.

Being a victim doesn't excuse victimizing other people.

Usually I'm skeptical of some trafficking charges especially in a city like Toronto because the definition of "trafficking" is often abused itself. But in this case, Lisa was held against her will with prospects only if she agreed to strip...or atleast that's probably what she believed.
