How come "energy" drinks are so expensive?

Seems like the cheapest you can get say a four pack of that "Rockstar" is like $7.50 at Walmart.

I mean I know thay tout them as a health product becuse they put some ginseng and taurine, whatever the fuck that is, in there but the margin must be like 500% compared to regular carbonated drinks in the can.

You can get "Red Rain" which seems like an indentical clone to "Red Bull" for about half the price.

There seems to be about twenty different brands in the 7-11 whenever I want to pick one up for a drive somewhere but generally they are like $3.29 or some such for a large can.

How come competitive pressure hasn't forced down the price?

They all taste the same to me, kind of a sour citrus flavour but on a hot day I do prefer them to a coffee for a caffeine bump.

Anybody have a favourite or do you just shop by price?

They're expensive because we still buy them. I don't have a favourite. I drink them more if I need the caffiene buzz. Honestly, I find the taste revolting. The Sobe energy drink was tolerable, but I haven't seen it in quite some time. Also, I need the diet energy drinks. Type 1 diabetic.

I've seen them on sale occasionally. RockStar for $2.50. I still have a few from that sale. Even on a hot day, I don't find them refreshing. I'd rather take lemonade. Keep in mind, I haven't tried many brands. I'm sure their are some that taste decent.

here's some info from Dr.Oz on this topic hahaha

http://ask.doctoroz.com/question/energy-drinks

and here's his energy drink recipe

Instead of drinking energy drinks, you can make your own by taking a bottle of water and adding 1 TB of sugar and a pinch of salt.

- Also, Dr Oz said to eat a banana, because it is packed with potassium which is lost when you workout. Blood pressure rises a lot when you are low on potassium. Although, I bet the fact that Chiquita sponsored that segment helped Dr Oz to choose his recommendation of bananas.

Out being curious
Red Bull is so expensive because they have an incredible brand and it costs TONS of money to sponsor TWO Formula One team alone. Never mind all their extreme sports sponsorships. Think Red Bull Air Races for big stuff but also all the local skateboarders, skiers, snowboarders and so forth. Actually Red Bull is the ONE soft drink company I don't mind giving the extra money for the sugar water to for those reasons.

Coke and Pepsi are just opportunistic money grubbers who seldom give fuck all back as far as I can see...
They also sponsor an event called ice crash which is a hockey styled ice race to the finish...plus numerous paintballing teams (which is not cheap) and a TON of X-games stars ranging from snow and skate boarding to BMX stunt competitors....

IMHO they are all so overpriced...but being a youngin myself...they have an image that is attractive to others and makes u look badass...shallow as it may seem, its very true for my demograhpic...

My drink of choice...Rockstar.....who also make a premixed vodka rockstar which is always a fun starter to a nite :)

I usually end up getting the 2 for $5 at gas stations....

but to be honest...I'm not a coffee drinker nor do I ever want caffeine.....I find these drinks useless for the intended purpose...i find them more as a placebo or just an image...they just dont give me that "boost"

For an actual energy drink i prefer 5 hour energy...it works

I used to drink Red Bull exclusively, as it was the only one that didn't make me shake when I drank it. Then I found Red Rave, which is pretty much on par with Red Bull, but my friend picked it up at Costco for $20/case of 20 cans for me.
Recently a favorite band of mine announced going on the Rockstar Energy Drink Tour... One of the bonuses for the tour was that if you showed up at the venue with an empty can of Rockstar to recycle they would give you early admission. So I grabbed a can(only $1.25 here in KW), drank it down and found I really like it. And its cheaper than most, so I am sticking with it for now.

Just make sure you have healthy kidneys to clear out any excess potassium as too much potassium can stop your heart.

I have had Red Bull ONLY because a stripper I was seeing liked it with Vodka. Never did anything for me (The Red Bull that is!). Looks like a marketing scam for gullible kids. BS commercials and events sponsorships are expensive.

Caffeine doesn't give you energy, being jittery makes you even less productive in my opinion.

It's bullshit marketing.

Actually, bottled water is also very expensive compared to tap water. It is all marketing hype.

I have either a Monster or Rock Star once a day. HATE coffee, and just want the big caffeine rush.

Much to my surprise, the local Esso always has either M or R on sale- often 2/$4, sometimes 2/$5. which is ALWAYS cheaper than my local Loblaws?

I just buy the one on sale, in bulk.

You do know 99.9% of the population are mediocre, mindless sheep who succumb to mass consumer marketing right?
Besides energy drinks, the other two biggest rackets are tanning salons and weight loss clinics. Tanning salons are downright dangerous.
