Ok -I know you can't get the "good stuff" here in Ontario or Quebec but does anybody have any info on where some weed killer can be bought?

Other than crossing to Buffalo (try explaing why I'm hauling 5 years worth of the stuff) can any of this stuff be obtained any where.

I have a few on my lawn (which I just yank out) but a buddy of mine bought a house up Newmarket area and the time he viewed tha place it really didn't show the extent of the problem. But now -holy Moses of Murphy I have never seen such a display of weeds.lol. Honestly he almost has more dandelions than grass.

He refuses to re-sod that whole damn place and he wants to do the old fashioned weed and feed system. But this stuff can't be found anywhere. Any ideas?

My suggestion of kerosene and grass seeds didn't fly.

I feel your pain! And totally agree... I have a serious hate on for these bastids!

Can't stand them...

I take a bucket and manual weed puller around every couple days to eradicate them from my property... and a couple days later a few more pop up... The reason being my neighbour across the street seems to love them and is cultivating them on an exponential level!

ARG!

A dandelion is only a weed if you think of it that way. Add a few more wild flowers to the yard and create a meadow. Screw the lawn mower.

We unfortunately have a variety of poisonous options in the US. I hate seeing all these lawns sprayed and then posted with warnings to stay off for 24 hours (the 24 hour window is misleading). It contaminates the water supply of that yard and the neighbors, and exposes anyone on the lawn and in the neighborhood to cancer causing, neurologically damaging, birth defect causing toxins. All to kill a few beautiful dandelions.

The same weed guy who used to spray my GTA lawn with the good stuff for years now uses the organic/bio legal in Ontario weed spray (consisting of I know not what) to spray my lawn. The difference being the new stuff isn't as effective as the old stuff, and costs even more. Oh well, at least no one can say I'm posioning the eco-system now.

Same here and i feel your pain. I live beside a development owned by the city of Toronto. That means this property is 5000 sq ft of dandelions with a few blades of grass intermingled. All you can really do is use the manual dandelion puller and pull a couple dozen every weekend.

So make some wine. It probably won't win a ribbon at the country fair, but the buzz is cheap.

bring back killex, just don't overuse it. One liter of the stuff would last me about three seasons. I just spot spayed and have a weed free lawn. I'm on my last half liter, it should last me a least this season. If I knew where to get some, I'd stock up.

Great post. Unfortunately many do not feel the same. They want the manicured green lawn look. That's what's in fashion. But times will change and people will wonder why they used to like that green lawn so much. It doesn't have to be a choice between wild meadow and green grass either. There are lots of creative options that look great, don't require high maintenance, lots of water or chemicals to maintain.

I don't really mind the herbicide/pesticide ban although I'd feel alot better about it if golf courses had the same restrictions.

Try this company, it's legal and uses sarritor for weeds.

http://www.doctorgreen.com/index.php/ontario-lawncare-services/60.html
Yes. that is what the comapny I use sprays on as well:

"Sarritor = Broadleaf weed control.

The core of its success lies in native Canadian fungus - Sclerotinia Minor. The fungus kills weeds by growing into and absorbing weeds' tissues. Once the undesired plants are eliminated the fungus disappears with no residual effects. It takes approximately 5 to 7 days to terminate the weeds.
Sclerotinia minor is not harmful to people, pets or plants"

Lee Valley and lotsa garden centres will sell you a weed torch; walk around an flame the suckers. Not good for the grass—and a large carbon footprint—, but grass comes back. So do the dandelions, because a lawn is their perfect environment, but if you keep mowing off or pulling off every tiny new yellow flower as soon as you see it the plants you do get will be smaller and weaker and fewer. But the secret is as soon as they appear, a 'grown-up' dandelion flower plucked and dropped can still turn to seed. Thousands of seeds.

Remember lawns became fashionable on eighteenth century English estates because they shrieked 'see how rich I am, I can afford to have people constantly tend and mow this useless ground that serves no other pupose than to be monochrome green'. You wanna lawn, gotta do the work. Please don't poison us all with chemicals because you're lazy.

Have you actually read any information on these "poisons" or are you just running around yelling the sky is falling because David Miller and Dalton McGuinty tell you to? Personally, I lend more credence to Health Canada:

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/cps-spc/pubs/pest/_fact-fiche/24d/index-eng.php

As always, this assumes the user can actually follow directions on the label. All bets are off if you plan on digging your hand into the weed and feed to spread it, then grabbing a nice sandwich for lunch. Which is why you can still buy Roundup in ready to use format, but not concentrate. The Province has decided that the average person is unable to follow directions properly.

Sorry, back to the scare tactics.

Thanks blog, for quoting my entire post right above your bizarrely overstated description of it (and right under the post itself).

As with poison labels, I'm sure anyone who wants to read can decide for themselves. As with other lethal devices and substances I am quite content, in fact I expect, to have government control them and ensure that they are not used by folks who don't know enough to read.

problem is if you are walking on a bunch of Dandelions you can get yellow stain on underfoot & spread indoors. ALSO what about all the prickly weeds. No longer can you walk on the " lawn" barefoot . Play some soccar , fall down & get thistles in the face!
