This forum is running vbulletin. Ask the company that makes it this question.
A couple years ago a vBulletin modification came out allowing admins to view the PM's of members. Obviously, the discussion ensued regarding whether this was ethical/lawful, etc. but that aside, the modification nevertheless exists for all vBulletin license holders. However, this modification is for an older version of vBulletin than this forum uses, which means it may not be a compatible modification even if someone were to try and install it here. For the record I trust the mods and admins on this site and think they do a fantastic job. This discussion is all simply theoretical.

Apart from that, the only way a mod or admin could view your private messages would be to change the password of a user's account in the Admin Control Panel. They could then log into that user's account using the newly changed password and view the PM's. The user, however, would not be able to log back in as the admin/mod cannot change the password back to what it was (because they wouldn't know what it was, only what they've changed it to).

That's the only way a mod could do it. An admin with direct access to the database could retrieve them manually.

I use the PM feature on a daily basis, i'm curious if anyone else like moderators or maybe Fred Zed can view what I receive or what I send ... thoughts ?
OK..let's say someone was using TERB to commit crimes, a police matter. Someone with admin access like me can access the PMs.
However, a regular mod does not have access to your PMs.

There are many reasons why members use the "Personal Message " feature of this forum, discuss topics or describe in great detail subjects you wouldn't in a public forum for various reasons, myself included, ..........try it, you'll like it ..... however the actual reason for my inquiry was because i was surprise,.... no SHOCKED ! .. when I was told from what i perceive to be a very reliable source, some Terb members no longer have privileges here on Terb .. "banned " due to " private discussions subjects " they were participating in via " Personal Messages " ... so as naive as it may sound, it was my understanding that only the member who i sent the message to could view my message.

so my question is simple, ... can anyone else , moderators, administrators, owners or who ever view my personal massages ?
I think what happened here is that the offending PMs were forwarded to a Mod.

As to why we never wanted access, I would ask you to consider the legal ramifications of having access. Trust me, it ain't a pretty picture.
Is it worse than opening Miss Maya Blue's personal mail? Hee, hee, hee. Insert "open envelope" smilie here.

Maybe not on this board, but i do know that other boards have in the past accessed my pm's. The board rhymes with gberb. I was in the process of setting up an appointment with an escort off of company time and the Mod of that board at the time obviously read the message and sent the escort a threatening message using my account. While it was never proven publicly, the MOd of that board at the time had to be the owner of said agency or the Mod passed on info on to them
When i questioned the Mod at the time they said someone must have gotten into my hotmail account and changed my password because that was changed as well.

All boards of this type have the capability to view pm's. It's built into the software.
Not during the years that I've used vBulletin. If they did build it into the software, it didn't last too long. Maybe there might have been a 'hack' to do that, but not to my knowledge.

so my question is simple, ... can anyone else , moderators, administrators, owners or who ever view my personal massages ?
I answered your question in my first post.

I never knew they even came out with that. I know at one point they came out with the option of Admin being able to adjust the users password, but not to see the pms. Betcha it didn't last long.

The police can see your PMs.
Not true.

No they can't. They can ask site admin for them if they have a court order.
And even so, I believe that the location of your server has to figure in with the court order doesn't it Fred? Or should I say Oagre lol.

Same goes for your email provider or ISP. Of course they can access
your records if they have to.
It's always nice to have your own server ;)

Big brother, as in LE or the government, can snoop but not without a warrant or court order, no?
I would imagine that if someone with craft wanted to 'hack' into most web sites, they could, if what they were to gain was very very interesting, but for those who are crafty, they usually like a challenge or money.. lol... for them.. TERB has neither.

So...let's all just agree that while your PMs may be private in the sense that everyone on the board does not see them - just the addressee and someone with sufficient adminstrative permissions. As Fred mentioned, if someone presents him with a court order, well then your PM is probably going to be read by some Crown prosecutor somewhere. Think about the circumstances that would give rise to a court order to access ALL of your electronic media in whatever form - unless you've killed someone or are engaged in a MAJOR criminal conspiracy - then you are pretty safe.

Now, let's get real. Fred and his crew have more than enough things to do with this board than worry about individual PMs. And if you are silly enough to think that ANYTHING in the digital world is private then I have some prop wash, smoke shifters and boiler steam to sell you.

There are a variety of alphabetic agencies, most notably NSA and CSE (look that one up) who constantly monitor the electronic exchange of information (landlines, cell phones, radio transmissions, internet, I could go on...for things that are of interest. Anyone who was familiar with the ULTRA secret and the breaking of the Japanese codes during WWII understands that agencies have many capabilities that they never admit to because of national security. Pearl Harbour and Covington were two examples where it was demeened in the national interest not to take certain actions so as to prevent the enemy from being aware that their communications were compromised.

That all being said, Fred I didn't really mean all those nasty things that I said about you in my PM last month...
