Your pm's are kept inside of a table on the database. If the owner of the website, or whoever had super admin access, knew how to read the tables properly, acquired access to the database, looked up your userID, looked up date, etc, etc, they could see your pms, but they can't be searched and it would be very hard to tell who they are written to, because you aren't labeled as 'zigzaw joker' in the mysql table, neither is the person you are sending to, etc, etc.

Otherwise, it is a HUGE pain in the ass if Fred really wanted to take the time to read your pm's, especially considering the fact of how many members there are on TERB, etc.

As far as the moderation team, I wouldn't suspect that Fred would give anyone direct access to his database other than himself.

I'm curious as to how some PM's are censored though... e.g. other forum's url's get routinely "x'd" out...

Not trying to stir the pot, just curious is all...
vbulletin has word censorship options. So, no matter where you post those words, they will be censored, and replaced. Both on the board, and the PM, as they both reference the same word list.

All boards of this type have the capability to view pm's. It's built into the software.

Yes, I can read your thoughts, but that's because secretly I'm Santa Claus and am making a list.

The capability to read PM's is not in the software. NO mod can see them.

There are many reasons why members use the "Personal Message " feature of this forum, discuss topics or describe in great detail subjects you wouldn't in a public forum for various reasons, myself included, ..........try it, you'll like it ..... however the actual reason for my inquiry was because i was surprise,.... no SHOCKED ! .. when I was told from what i perceive to be a very reliable source, some Terb members no longer have privileges here on Terb .. " banned " due to " private discussions subjects " they were participating in via " Personal Messages " ... so as naive as it may sound, it was my understanding that only the member who i sent the message to could view my message.

so my question is simple, ... can anyone else , moderators, administrators, owners or who ever view my personal massages ?

I thought I read in previous posts that any member who receives "threatening" or "hate" PM's can forward them to the Mods for appropriate action which might mean banning the sender.

my understanding is that it was the " subject of discussion ", not anything else, ... i think nilihism might be on to something ... may raise flags to administrators

The mods say they can't view the PM's and I would believe them. Plainly, though, the server administrator can view your PM's. Similarly, the police presumably could retrieve your PM's with a warrant. They are stored in a database table which, while possibly not exposed via the software, can be retrieved fairly easily by someone with access to the database and a modicum of technical skill.

Not according to post # 2...
It depends of the permissions that the board administrators have (in all likelihood- I haven't messed with vBulletin in forever). It has been said that they don't have permission to do that. However, the system administrator can always scrape the data from the database as per #2. But that would be a little tedious. As far as the 'censoring' goes-- That doesn't require and human intervention beyond initial setup and updating. (If you have full 'superuser' / admin / root privileges on the hardware there's not much the software can do.)
