Some parents refused to let their daughters get the HPV vaccine, a few schools in Alberta refused to give them entirely do to their conservative values. They literally decided they'd prefer their children to die of cervical cancer then make it less risky is they chose to become sexually active.

So when we have a small but noticeable segment of the population that would rather see their kids dead then fuck, can we really be surprised people want their kids uninformed as well?

That might be a bit of a stretch Grammie... but I see your point. There was some discussion over the HPV vaccine in my daughter's (Catholic) school, but almost all the girls had it. My daughters said there were only a couple "hold-outs"...

It wasn't much of an issue in Ontario in general, but a few stories came out of Alberta about schools refusing to give them to their students.

What a bunch of bs. Your going to teach a 8 year old sex education. They are innocent and sweet. It's information overload, they won't even understand.

They are over reaching their mandate.

Do they think parents teach their kids didly squat, cmon on now.

I don't think this is out of line at all. I actually applaud McGuinty for having the balls to do this. he probably realized the conservatives and NDP leaders are clowns and really have zero chance of beating him unless he is caught with hookers and cocaine. Socialization is an important part of schooling, probably more important then the learning at grade 3...sexual norms and values are a key part of socialization. I think there should also be sex ed for parents of immigrant...not to teach them about sex, but to help them understand the sexual norms their children will be surrounded by. This way the idiots might stop killing their daughters for "honour".

I knew I liked both girls and boys at the age of 9, and I would have killed for some proper education on gender differences, gender identity and sexual orientation. It sure would have made things much easier on me, instead of finally finding out a couple years later what I was feeling wasn't sick and wrong, like my parents kept telling me. It was good to know I wasn't the only one, that I wasn't just a freak of nature.
I think having a better education at a younger age is much better than always being curious, because even at 6 or 7 you are, or don't any of you remember having kindergarten GFs and BFs? And this way you learn as you get curious, instead of being curious and not finding out for years what is going on.

Grade 3 is really not too young. Girls start to masturbate at a very young age, well before sexual puberty. Certainly by grade 3 they have an awareness that not all couples are heterosexual, and when I was growing up we had certainly seen dogs humping in the street or had caught either older siblings or babysitters making out.

Teaching about sex and gender identity does not mean that a boy in grade three is suddenly going to decide he is gay and run down to Church Street to offer blowjobs.

This would not be an issue if parents actually took some responsibility for the education of their kids. How many parents wait until it is too late to have a "birds and the bees" conversation, if at all? And lets face it, many parents are horribly misinformed themselves. If parents in North America were up to it, I doubt we would have as many teen pregnancies.

It is up to the parents to instil the moral lessons and put sex, love and relationships in context.

That was only a couple of Catholic Boards in Alberta. It was also very controversial in Ontario amongst Ontario Catholic Boards and actually went to a vote before being narrowly passed in a few.

My only real concern is how many Grade 3 teachers are qualified or will receive training. I'm willing to bet the next stories will be about whether the classes will be co-ed or not.

If they don't talk about it, they can pretend that their kids will never have sex, any pregnancies are immaculate conception and any STDs are from toilet seats.

As for the ulterior motive? With this government, who knows.... maybe something as simple as pandering to the gay community, or the teachers union... who knows.
Or maybe their hope is that we will end up with fewer children having children...

Mine taught me diddly squat... I think my sex ed talk with them was "If you have any questions just ask... k' bye!"..... would have been nice to have gotten the information taught to me rather than pick it up here and there (often incorrectly)

It's catering to idiots like this that creates teenagers that think drinking bleach cures AIDS.

Wow that was the fastest flip flop in history. What a jackass McGuinty looks like. Did they not get ANY input before making this announcement. With idiocy like this, he may as well do lines of coke with hookers.
