The other day I was in a park kicking a ball. A dog chased after my ball. The dog's owner, a middle aged woman, called the dog back and then started admonishing the canine. I mean TALKING to it, the way you would talk to a child.

"I've told you before not to chase after balls. Why did you do that? That's the man's ball, not for doggies."

It's not the first time I've seen this insane behaviour. Once I saw a mom pushing a stroller past a dog owner who remarked to her poodle: "See the baby? Isn't he cute?".

Jesus! All a dog can understand is tone of voice and physical action. You can't "talk" to a dog. Best friend and all that, but as soon as you start treating them like people, you're fucked in the head.

Maybe these people are using their pets as child substitutes. For sure they have a fucked up relationship with the animal kingdom. Either way it's sad indicator of our society.

I used to talk to my dog like that, I knew she couldn't understand but I liked the idea she could. She would cock her head trying to figure out what I was saying. It was more for my benefit than the dog's, having someone to talk to - I still miss her.

It would look a bit crazy to a passerby, I agree.

Maybe it's a form of transference. No kids, no family, no friends, so ................................

Nothing wrong with talking to your pets.

An animal can sense emotion from your voice. -- if you're angry, praising, etc.

LOl this reminds me of the little britain USA skit:

but dogs and other animals do learn to understand vocal commands etc. They might not know "english" but they do learn.

I know my shop cat likes to hang out on my work bench when I'm working and on more than one occasion he was laying at the end of the bench right by a piece of sandpaper I needed so I said to him: Hey dont' just sit there, gimme that piece of sand paper. (and pointed at it). He looked at it, looked at me, looked at it, looked at me, he KNEW I wanted him to do something, just wasn't sure what.....

Correct and that's mostly based on tones, inflections and body language. They don't care about dangling participles and wether you end your sentence correctly. Tone and body language. I know, I speak many doggie dialects, but I'm a terrible speller and that's when I get in trouble.

doggy dialects, that's funny! I guess you have to speak Tibetan when you talk to shih tzus, mandarin when you talk to char peis and speak with a irish lilt when you talk to irish setters?

I talk to my dog too. But then I'm also known to talk to myself.
I don't think it's a problem if you talk to yourself every now and then. You should only be concerned if you reply back to yourself! Then, there might be a problem. :)

My SO talks to our dog..... I told her to let me know if he talks back......

I have a very smart dog, he knows what I want based on a few key words (come, up, down, sit, wait)....

I do think people who have never had kids can have strange relationships with their dogs, I worked with a woman who took her golden to see Santa.....

Maybe we cannot converse with our human masters, but we can certainly....

Squirrel...

(sorry about that)

... read and write (and type) but not many humans know this about us.

Between a rock and a hard place
It's the ones carrying on a two way conversation that I worry about.
I do that. Just like the dog lady in the video. I anthropomorphise my dog and give her the best dialogue. For example, someone says, "Hi Doggy", I help her reply with "hello human".

I have kids, but I like talking to my dog more.

My dog has an extensive vocabulary and responds to boh voice commands and hand signals.

Dogs on average has the intelligence and understanding of a 2.5 year old child. Their average vocabulary is 125
words, they can count to 5.
And they have long term memories, they learn from their mistakes, they imitate behaviors they see in other dogs and humans.
