Well for this week's installment of Dave's Dumb Post...

Good cook book recommendations...And I don't mean how to cook in the sack either.

I'm looking for books for...

The diet concious. I'm not saying a diet cook book, just those that are a little more concious of it. Ie no recipes using 1lb of butter.

Not terribly exotic. Not that I don't care for exotic foods, but exotic recipes take exotic ingredients. I live in the boonies, and there are very few minorities up here. So very few stores actually carry foods for those styles of cooking.

Simple. I'm not a great cook, so KISS is best.

Thanks in advance.

Dave, try the GI Diet and the GI Diet Cookbook. Excellent sources for exactly what you're after. I've lost 15 lbs using these recipes and eating guidelines. Written by Rick Gallop, formerly of the Ontario Heart and Stroke Association.

Nothing wrong with cookbooks as they're a quick to grab off the shelf, but don't forget the internet,. There are great sources there that you can tweak to your needs and it's free.

You might want to try Americas Test Kitchen Cook Book. You should be able to find it at Chapters.

Not a fan on cook books since you could get the recipes free on line.

Plus, the following helps,

BTW, what we lack of are not the recipes. We do lack discipline and strategy to plan and prepare dinners beforehand weekly.

Ok I need to get my mind out of the gutter because I totally read something else in the title of this thread...;)

I have a bout 300 hundred cook books and I really don't have a favourite. Mind you I don't think I have ever used one recipe out of them. I tend to use them as a point of reference and improvise and get creative.

Gordon Ramsey came out with a terrific cookbook last year (maybe 2008?) called "Healthy Appetite."

You find some of his other books here if you are interested. Not to worry about his attitude - he can't yell at you in writing. :)

Thanks all. The reason I was after books was...Well, I don't have a printer, and I don't get a long with them either. Plus my hand writing just sucks.

As for ones I like, Company"s Coming is a good series in my opinion.

I do that too. I tend to use recipes more for ideas or use them as a guide and then play around with them. More fun that way. :)

I stopped playing around with recipes when I put parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme into a pasta sauce. I like the song, the sauce...not so much.
LOL I think the problem was the sage - unless it's in a sage butter sauce for ravioli or something (with fresh sage leaves). I wouldn't put sage, or rosemary for that matter, into a tomato sauce but that's just me. Basil, oregano and thyme work good together imo. :)

Right...remembered the concept, not the phrasing. One of my favorites. Thanks Kyra.
No problem, I thought there might be a few terbies that would enjoy the video.
You can still claim the prize, I'm not one for serving man. ;)

EVERY kitchen should have a Five Roses cookbook (I have one). Also check out Cooking Light: Way to cook. But like others have suggested, I get a lot of my ideas from websites.
