Anti-Olympics protesters riot in Vancouver

Anti-Olympic protesters smashed windows as they marched through downtown Vancouver on Saturday morning. (CBC)
A group of more than 200 masked protesters smashed windows, vandalized cars and newspaper boxes and intimidated pedestrians in downtown Vancouver Saturday morning, before being confronted by police in riot gear.

The anti-Olympics protesters, many dressed in black balaclavas and masks and carrying a ladder, smashed up to three windows at the Hudson's Bay store and one at the Toronto Dominion Bank near the intersection of Granville and West Georgia streets.

The group also sprayed the windows with red paint and threw marbles and spat at police.

The group then marched down West Georgia Street toward the Bayshore Hotel in Coal Harbour where the International Olympic Committee members are staying.

Police arrested one person protesting against the Olympics on Saturday morning in Vancouver. (Leanne Hazon/CBC)
But the marchers were turned back by the Vancouver Police Department crowd control unit and the 2010 Integrated Security Unit at the Cardero Street intersection and at least one protester was arrested by police, who managed to split up the group.

As of 11:20 a.m. PT, the part of the group had been encircled by police at the intersection of the Robson and Jervis Streets in the downtown area.

How much more crap are the cops going to put up with?

It seems so stupid - the time to protest the Olympic Games was 7 years ago BEFORE the decision was made (but that would be no fun).

I truly wish the cops would arrest every last one of them except we have nowhere to put them. (Mind you I bet half of them or more are not even Canadian, just the same guys who were protesting in Seatle, or Quebec City or Denmark, or wherever there was any kind of political gathering.

I think most are just professional protestors who disagree with anything that the rest of us agree with.

I figure that the top 50% of wage earners in this country pay 98% of all taxes. I would be that pretty much all of the so called "protestors" fall into the lower quartile of wage earners which means that they pay fuck all in taxes anyway. Nice of them to worry about my money.

A tatic of the police to break up peaceful civil disobedience is to send in a gang to cause a disturbance giving the police an excuse to use force

I think you'd be hard pressed to find any 'professional protesters' coming from the left wing. There isn't enough money around to pay them, there might be money from some of the industry backed, right wing sources (Tea Party?), but I'd like you to find one reputable source to back up that claim. Sounds bogus to me.

Actuayll, as far as I recall off the top of my head, Canadian taxes used to largely be paid by corporations, and that changed gradually from the '70's on. Now its indivuals paying most of the tax burden through income taxes and GST. And of that, probably the largest chunk is paid by the middle class, who don't have access to the same kind of write offs as the rich.

Time to recruit some of those Iranian "Blackshirts". They know something about dealing with rowdy crowds.

I don't know about them just being hooligans, I have heard that the protesters are against the dollars being spent on the games where it could be used elsewhere (I guess social programs?). That is fine, but when it comes to damaging private property and rioting, something like the videos we saw from the 60's where the police were using batons comes to mind.

Yes, arrest them all, ship them to the wilds of hudson's bay, drop em off and say: if you make it back to civilization alive, your sentence is done. Get it CIVILIZATION.

Protest, put up posters and carry placards, scream all you want. Soon as you cross the line from peaceful to violence, you forfeit your right to protest.

As I understand it there are two main issues that the protesters are upset about:

1) Hudson Bay contracted out the manufacture of official olympic clothing to China.

2) People in low rent housing / budget hotels etc etc are being displaced (some rendered homeless) to make way for olympic visitors willing to pay more.

While I agree with their POV... I for sure do not agree with method of protest.

This post must be the stupidest thing that I have ever read regarding civil disobedience! You have the right to your opinion; however, you're wrong. In fact, Within a week of BC being awarded the games. The security mission starts being created, developed from levels one to level five. In fact, the times that we are facing. The full service of Canadian Military should be running the security, with RCMP and Vancouver Police and Special security behind them.

They are not protestors at all, dressed in militia gear and hoods, baracaded themselve as a defence with a ladder. Makes them an organized Terrorist group, and anyone marching with organized terrorists are involved. Yelling, screaming, baiting of Riot officers is public mischief. These protesters (terriorists) threw objects and spat at police, well that's assault. They vandalized and possibly luted from stores. By doing those things, they hurt the general public, shop keepers, car owners, etc. When the police move in, they retaliate and that is resisting arrest, so if they need a beat down too bad.

Media then speaks with un-masked protestors and they all cry the blues. I call bullshit, they knew exactly what would happen when the line was crossed.

Let's see what all the masked idiots get a as sentence for inciting terrorism, and the others should get it too. There is no more protesting in Canada; these acts are all forms of terrorism.

But, I do enjoy where up in they end!

You really don't want to know
Toronto? It's being held in Huntsville......
No, that's the G8 summit that will be in Huntsville from June 25–27.

But then the G 20 Summit is being held in Toronto on June 26–27. As it stands right now the Federal Government is leaning towards hosting it at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, against the wishes of Toronto who wants it to be held at the the new Allstream Centre at Exhibition Place. (easier to control and less chaos in the core)

Every avaliable police officer in Ontario will be in Toronto and Huntsville for the anticipated security needs. The plan will be to cancel/move any other events (Sports, Concerts, Gay Pride Parade) to dates outside of that week, as well as shut down trafic within a few blocks radius of the event centre.

It'll be a nightmare.
