Out being curious
Well..I'm not sure who cares or not (I don't, but I do go clubbing every weekend) Some members of the cast of Jersey Shore are coming to Toronto very soon, Suite 106 and Body English are the two scheduled clubs.

I beleive its just the guys...pauly and the "situation" , I could care less to see them, but I know they are going to attract some serious talent (hot chicks) to the clubs...so it should be fun ;)

I remember Rudy Guliani hated the glorification of the mob with the Sapranos (Guliani was a prosecutor who was known for being tough on the mob) and tried to bar the actors from marching in some Italian Day parade in NYC. Lots of Italian-Americans disliked that show too
fucking controversy sells ... i thought it was mike that did the punching.. but it was a douche school teacher..

i dislike the Soprano's as well .. wasn't CTV getting flack for airing the show during the 2006 Olympics!?
i grew up during the 80's with the term Gino and Gina thrown area as a stereotype.. now way i want to be considered a grease ball.
i believe the pecking order of Italians imigrating to ontario is Calabrese, Pugliese, Sicilian than Abruzzese, Friuliani and Marchigiana
Guido's / Gino's tend to be from the South stereotypically

I'm convinced that the wider north american society wants to believe that italians are simpletons more concerned with his salami and provolone paninis than anything of substance.
I know a real estate lawyer at my local starbucks who tells me that he arranges options on lands radiating out from the GTA, almost all of which are in the hands of a handful of very weatlhy italian families.

Remember that Italy is very poor land; no resources to speak of, 82% of the land mountainous and relatively unproductive, mostly denuded of trees, and with many natural barriers to trade within its territory, like the Apenine mountains. Compare all that with Germany (the mighty Rhine river, enormous coal deposits with powered the initail stages of its industrialisation), France with her fertile plains drained by vast rivers like the Loire, which even today produces the most food in Europe. England, with deposits of tin, peat and coal for fuel, and the constant rain that made her sheep's hair so long that it made Florence rich converting it into the famous Florentine red serge cloth (until Henry VII wised up and imposed an export tax on raw wool in the late 15th century, ruining Florence and making england's first fortune.)

Factoid: with debt/average income of only 34%, including mortgage debt, Italy imports $64 billion from Germany. With a debt/average income ratio in England of around 170%, her imprts from Germany amount to only 66 Billion. So if one were to scale up italian debt/personal income to the british or even french averages, then italian capacity to consume would far outstrip england's. And yet the convention wisdom over here is that England's an advanced, rich country and Italy's a shithole. Errr, not quite true, I'm afraid. Ok, southern Italy is a disgrace, but why quibble.

Well, being in real estate myself I can tell you that the very "small handlful" of Italian families who own all that land are mobsters. Yeah, yeah. I know - I am full of shit and stereotyping blah blah.

Take a look who owns most of the land in North York (i.e Dufferin Steeles, to Finch, Large buildings along Finch right into Jane Finch) Or the land around Klienburg (i.e. Dr's House , Art Gallery etc.). The sterotype isn't fake. It's real. Many wealthy Italians are mobbed up to the fucking tits. There are a few who aren't- Ie. Concord Foods, Longos etc. But many, many are,

I don't know where you went to school but at my school when the Italians were called Ginos the only thing they "embraced" was the guy who called them that in a headlock before beating the shit out of him. It is no differen't then calling an Indian a "P*ki", an Asian a "Ch**k" or "G**K", an Irishman a "M**k". As tarkovsky states it is used freely on the show because they are referring to themselves mostly. When it is used as a term of derision or negativity, especially from someone not of Italian descent, it is not going to be embraced.
They used the term amongst themselves.
Still remember the conversation very well, three friends, (guys I knew) dressed in Jordache jeans.
I don't think the term Gino is nearly as offensive as some of the others you've mentioned.
Asians and Indian people never call themselves chinks or P*ki.
However, I know teens from that neighbourhood have no problem with the term Gino, used in a friendly context.

I would agree with that. Just speaking from my experience. None of my Italian friends would have appreciated being called Ginos, but as others have already posted, for some reason it is not nearly as offensive as Wop, Guinea, or Dago. No telling how people will react. I guess alot of it depends on context.

There are more Ciociarri (South Lazio) in Toronto than Pugliesi and Marcegiani combined - myself included. Le Marche is one of the most obscure regions in Italy, it is famous for it's wild boar and produces the best white wine on the boot.

One of my kids in a grade 10 class was telling me how much she loved this show, that was enough for me to completely avoid it :D

Some of my Facebook friends have joined a group of people claiming they will name their first-born son "The Situation". I watched the show once to see what all the hype was about, but I don't think I could watch it on a regular basis.
