Hi guys,

Just got here for work and am amazed by the talent in the Airport alone! There are some really hot women down here.

More details of trip to come as they unfold, I am here for 2 weeks.

Feel free to chime in with any local info/tips if you have been.

Cheers

Rio is a violent place.

Just to make sure you guys understand that Brazil, especialy Rio is one of the most violent places on earth. I know a guy that looked out his hotel room window one morning and saw a guy chasing another guy with a gun. An hour later there was a white sheet over a body on the beach.

Rio is amazing. The women are amazing but I found a lot of them were really aggressive and later turned out to be professionals trying to hustle you. Safety is paramount. Just stay away from the dark area, do all your banking during the day, and try not to draw too much attention to yourself. I've heard stories of people getting robbed for their laptops and watches.

Leave all your valuables in the hotel safe. Do not take your wallet, take small amounts of cash. Don't stray off the tourist tracks...

Check out: Botanical Gardens, Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer), Copacabana Palace and Forte, National History and Art Museum, Ipanema beach, and if you're really adventuous and daring go to Sao Paolo, the women are incredible and despise Brazilian men. Just remember to be careful in Sao Paolo, very dangerous for tourists.

Terma L'Uomo and 4x4. Go to Help at night.

Don't get scammed. Don't die.

And go to Cafe Alcazar on Ave Atlantico in Copacabana, there's lots of hobbyists there in the early afternoon getting ready for terma runs.

Personally speaking, I think the dangers that we always hear about are significantly exaggerated. My son has been working there for three years and he hasn't had a problem except for having his Blackberry swiped while he was texting in the street (very careless).

I was in Rio last March and I even ventured into the notorious Rocinha Favela by myself (a favela is a shanty town on a hill).

http://www.travelblog.org/South-America/Brazil/Rio-de-Janeiro/Rio-de-Janeiro/blog-161542.html

I spent about 90 minutes in Rocinha, I never felt unsafe and I never had a problem. Maybe I was just lucky?? I did see one dead body (an old man) but it appeared to be a natural death. The people seemed very friendly to me and I got several photos. I saw a few SWs but I didn't want to push my luck to that degree. Here are a few of the photos I took (they're on my Facebook page but I can't let you in there!):

Here's a lady who could have been a princess if she had been born elsewhere (we spent a few fleeting moments in mutual admiration):

This was the Coke seller (no, not that type of Coke!):

He she is again (Coca-Cola lol!):

And here's a charming lady who was handing out advertising pamphlets:

Here's a great video showing Rio as it was in 1936. Its incredible beauty hasn't changed at all in the last 75 years. There are a lot more people today though .....

^^^^ the problem with Rio is not the danger and crime. I lived there many years and can say that. Of course, some places are very dangerous, but that's more to the north of the city.

Just keep a low profile, dress very casually, an old shirt, old flip-flops, etc. Don't hang that expensive camera around your neck, as I've seen many German tourists do.

As for favelas, they're mostly safe, even more now that the police has begun a military type occupation. It's a program called "UPP (Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora)". All drug dealers left.
Note: while in power drug dealers were maintaining law and order in favelas and surrounding areas by punishing petty thieves and criminals. Even then it was pretty safe. Now that they're gone, some problems appeared that police cannot deal with. But that's another topic.

What bothered me most in Rio was the filth: taxi drivers urinating in "Aterro do Flamengo" (a famous avenue that connects the Santos Dummont airport to Copacabana), litter everywhere, the beaches had garbage all over the sand, the water is dirty, sewers dumping in the beaches, etc.

People are pigs over there, that's a fact.

But it's a nice city to visit for one week or two, three weeks the most.

Note: it's Rocinha, not Rochina. :D

As safe as Rocinha is another favela called Dona Marta, located in Botafogo, next to Copacabana and Flamengo.

It's also occupied by police (UPP). It has a tram system for taking you up to the top, where you can see the Cristo Redentor from its base.

It's a pretty nice ride.

Yes, go to HELP Disco at night, located right on Ave Atlantica. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the crazy nights, but Sun thru Tues are quieter and more relaxed. It is the most incredible discoteque in the world, and the girls (99% working) can also be the most beautiful. Around 250R for the whole night. It's cheap ($1.50 a beer), and so fucking hot...
Balcony is a good hanging place day or night and the beach in front is much safer than the touristy beach (just snatching crimes).
Dressing inconspicuously will likely leave you with just fond memories...

I was at HELP last summer...apparently for the last time. There was alot of talk there about things changing for the Olympics...favelas, prostitution...HELP! It really is happening...
At least I was there...many times actually. Will miss it...more than the Toronto scene.
