Maybe because civilized, intelligent people wonder how it's possible that a so-called modern country can still be ruled like it's the middle ages. I understand that the countries laws need to be obeyed or face the consequences, but that part of the world is just plain bizarre. Every day, there's something in the news about something.... a young girl being stoned to death because she was gang-raped by her brother and cousins, or a woman being doused with acid because she didn't obey her husband....

Unfortunately in this case the victim was a Pakistani Muslim, and in the UAE all Muslims are subject to a very severe version of Sharia Law (non-Muslims are exempt). Under Sharia, the victim of rape must produce at least 4 Muslim male witnesses in order to secure a conviction against the perpetrator.
A lot of Pakistanis go to the rich Middle East to work as well. They are not valued highly by the Arabs. There is a hierarchy in Muslim society.
That begs the question then as to how a women could be raped in the first place with four male witnesses witnessing the event. What the hell do they do, just watch it unfold?
They take out their cellphones and take a video of the event. Insert "frown" smilie here.
Given the insanity of the Muslims it is no wonder that the suicide rate for their women is so high.

I don't try to understand the rationale behind these customs. As far as I'm concerned all religion and religious law is completely devoid of logic.
Alright so I haven't read all of the comments (perhaps because it is late, perhaps because I am lazy) but my roommate is from Dubai and says that people drink everywhere there. The reason the woman was slapped with a drinking charge is not because she was drinking but because she is Muslim and was drinking. And apparently sex before marriage is very much looked down upon, hence the law.
We obviously don't agree with how this was played out by authorities. It is absolutely ridiculous and the focal point should be the woman seeing justice against her attacker. However it is true when some of the above posters state (ok so I read a few comments) that when travelling abroad be sure to know about rules and customs. What may seem like a liberty here may be a serious offence abroad (I'm talking about sex before marriage in this case)

More so, we could never imagine the authorities turning a blind eye to rape and in return laying charges of a different nature. I hope this couple sees justice against their attacker. Rape is never ok, regardless of the circumstances.
