Yeah it's a hassle. Usually a traffic jam, 2 out of the last 3 times they searched my car and detained me for 20 minutes. Just not worth it for me.
Unless there is something in your past that prevents you from qualifying, apply for a NEXUS card.
But it does sound like the OP would be prevented from qualifying for NEXUS.
Sorry OldJones, I thought it was clear I was responding to Roblestone's post, rather than the OP's but apparently not.

I would agree with you that the OP is not eligable for NEXUS for at least a decade if ever.

I can bet you that there is a regulation/rule to cover just about every possible scenario though.

For eg: I bet if someone acts beligerent, whoop, no entry. Suspicious of being intoxicated? whoop, no entry. Suspicion on being on drugs, whoop, no entry.

I know for one they have a LOT of latitude and rely on their training and judgement. They ARE the first line of defence afterall.
You must be a customs agent. I knew there was something about you I didn't like.

There's lots of places who will gladly separate you from your money - but there is no reason you can't apply for a pardon on your own, and at minimal cost...

A person must obtain a Pardon Application Guide from the NPB offices or from the RCMP offices, provincial and municipal police offices and courts of justice. The Guide will outline how to obtain required documents such as the criminal record, local police records check and other pertinent information. An applicant does not need a lawyer or representative to apply for a pardon. For assistance, an applicant may call the Clemency and Pardons Division toll-free number: 1-800-874-2652 or contact one of our regional offices .

I find that the US customs agents are much nicer then the Canadian ones, of course there are some that are on power trips but most are great as long as your not an ass.
Last year when I arrived in Vegas they made everyone remain on the plane while 2 armed agents came to take me off. Everyone on the plane was freaked and so was I. The first thing they did was APOLOGIZE to me, my name was similar to that on the no fly list. They checked my back ground and finger prints to make sure I wasn't the guy they were looking for. The entire process took aboutt 30 mins and said they would enter it in to the system so that it wouldn't happen again! They were very professional and courteous through the whole process and I gave them the same courtesy. No point getting upset with them since they have the right to stick me back on a plane home if they wanted! We shook hands and I enjoyed my vacation.

My friends boyfriend has the same travel restrictions as the OP for a criminal record and can't travel to the US either. You got by before because they never did a detailed check, but now it's up to you to try and rectify the situation and not scream about it. I'm sorry but the simple fact is that you assaulted another human being with a weapon so you get no sympathy about your travel restrictions and it should be an inconvinience for you!
Apply for the waiver and pay what ever it costs and be happy if everything works out.

Absolutely. It will take significantly less than 24 months (12-18 months), and as you point out, at minimal cost. There's a processing fee for the application, and a fee for the records check.

I find the Canadian ones nicer, but my expectation is that this is because I am Canadian. I expect that the border guards of any country show a more positive attitude towards their own citizens.

That said I have encountered rude border guards only once or twice in my life ANYWHERE, and I'd put that down to those individuals rather than a trend.

I have got more or less of a runaround on different trips but never been treated badly. The few who were rude obviously I just sucked it up and kept my "your an asshole" thoughts to myself. Arguing with a guy who has the power to pepper spray you, tazer you, throw you in a jail cell, and subject you to a full body cavity search, not to mention make notes on your file that will cause you grief for years to come--not smart.

I have to say though--

I like the Chinese system. They provide a little electronic survey for all passengers to fill out, post customs, where you rate how professional you thought the customs official was, and it is linked to the guy who interviewed you. I imagine they occaisonal negative comments but if one guy keeps consistently getting negative reviews he is spoken to.

Yes, so they say. A friend of mine got a pardon that I think they told him it would take that long. But he got it in about 6 months. I don't know why it came through so quickly for him.

They provide that timeline as an idea of the maximum time it should take. Things can always move faster depending on the circumstances.
