Does using Torrents increase your chances for viruses greatly?

I'm thinking of quitting downloading altogether because of the problems I've been having with my computer. I had no problems using torrents the past few years but the last few months my computer has encountered spyware/viruses. Not sure if it's the websites or torrents.

Do you use torrents and have no problems?

BTW, I have another thread running about virus recommendations but curious who out there uses torrents without virus problems.

For HIV and HPV I think you're pretty safe from catching these viruses from torrents. Not sure about H1N1. I think they have a vaccine for that somewhere. I red dat.

I use Avast and Malware (both free) and since I have been using these products, about 4 months now, I have had one spyware found by Malware and zero viruses, thanks to advice from fellow terbites. I don't know where I got it, it could have been from anywhere, even terb. I do a lot of downloading from torrent sites and I run a complete scan with both products once a week.

Depends on what you are downloading. Porn, hot programs, copywrited material like music. This stuff is more apt to contain nasties.

Agreed. Also can depend on the tracker site (or sites) that you are downloading from.

Most likely from the websites that you are surfing.

I have never had a spyware/virus problem with torrents and I download more than most people.

Ditto that, although I don't download much lately.
