This should be an interesting thread. Pick 3, and only 3 things that are overrated in your opinion. The rules are they have to be things that are commonly liked by most people, and you can't say everything is overrated.

I'll start. In my opinion 3 of the most overrated things on earth, in no particulare order, are:

Steak
Alcohol
Asian Women

Rock Concerts:Standing for 2 hours while a band plays music you would have heard clearer if you had bought the studio album.

Bars and Clubs:picking up women here is no easy task..there are better ways than venues where you have to shout to speak

Expensive Dates: Why take a girl to Barberian's when you can take her to Baton Rouge..you'll most likely just end up with a gold digger.

Alcohol....what is so great about a drug that the more you take the slower your reflexes are?
Asian Women....why are they better then Blonds?
Cars....why pay over $40,000 for any car unless you have money to waste?

Between a rock and a hard place
Disney World. So many people want to go. So many people walk away wondering WTF thousands of dollars went.

American Health Care Reforms. 1930 pages of "just sign it and get it over with". In the end it will just be a renewed act of throwing meager change on the floor and watching everybody scramble to pick up their share.

European Travel. A walk down Queen West or Yonge and Dundas is no longer any different than Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstraße or Avenue des Champs-Elysees. All are equally just as laden with cheesy souvenir wares and storefronts for major design corporations.

Christmas: Too much hussle and bussle, too much stress and faux cheer. If I get a whiff of the BS that I got with the family last Christmas, I'm hitting the theaters...Because of course all the SPs will be enjoying the day off too.

Vacation: Sitting on the beach with a drink in hand watching the belles walk by sounds pretty sweet, and something I'd like to try...Unfortunately, sitting around doing nothing is something I can't do. I suffer from a need for structure and activity (read: work)

A Life: Never had one. What's all the fuss about?

1) Guys, please forgive me but sex is overrated:D. As good as it is, I think the subject is way overblown.

2) Jogging. Way overrated. My jogger friend blew his knee out at age 48 and I don't think he is healthier or will live longer than me.

3) Someone mentioned vacation already. I find travelling on vacation much more stressful than spending a week off work in good old Toronto. Anyone been to Mexico lately and survived to tell the tale?

Our Public school system

Professional Sports

They keep everyone ignorant which is the reason they exist.

Nothing exists in Capitalism unless it benefits capitalism

Sports is the opium of the masses

Online social networking - So really any site that people live on. Facebook, myspace, POF

Money - It is paper. It is sad that a man/woman is measured/judged by how many pieces of this type of paper they have.

The End of the World - Everything is going to kills us apparently.

Marriage => 50% divorce rate, so why do chicks go psycho over a wedding?
Kids => $300K a pop, please shut up about them, please axe the Pixar movies
Reality TV => this could be a new torture device at Guatanamo Bay

Expanding our knowledge base is never a waste of money. The question is whether the same money could have been better spend on something else. (If our ancestors had not done space exploration, we would still be living in caves.)

HDTV - a lot like computers from over 5 years ago...new specs all the time Plasma, LCD, LED, 720 vs 1080, 60htz vs 120 vs 240 etc....I still love my old 27 inch Sony Trinitron that is 11 years old with my digital cable and PenthouseTV:D

Sex - the sizzle is hotter than the actual deed...thats why Strip clubs should be selling the sizzle not the meal.

Liberal/Democrat versus Conservative/Republican - in Canada and US they all end up doing the same thing.

1. Facebook

Do I really need to put everything about myself on line?

2. Vacations.

As others have mentioned and I agree. I'm not a traveller. I travel for business all the time. I know travelling for business is not the same as travelling for pleasure, but I like just being home. I have NO DESIRE to go to some place like Africa, or India, or Nepal where I have to step over turds in the street, or bodies in the gutter, or stand a good chance of getting shot, robbed, or killed in some other fashion.

3. New Years Eve.

My all time over-rated event. I don't get the deal. It's just another day and I'll fuck up writing cheques for the next 2 months. It's someohow expected that you need to go out and "party" at great expense and have this awesome time. I don't want to figure out what to do, I don't really want to join the throng, I have no desire to stand out in the cold, I don't want to listen to drunk chicks go "wooo". Restaurants or bars that are normally free to get into suddenly cost twice as much. Never mind the drunks on the road.

4. Valentines Day.

I fucking hate Valentine's Day. I know this is 4 but who gives a shit. One day a year you're expected to be Lance Romance (again at great cost). Restaurants are all over sold and have a "special menu" which costs more than usual.

5. Margaret Attwood - I agree. What a self absorbed old wind bag.

We learn very little in return for the money and minds being invested in space is what I mean

Just some esoteric knowledge that could have been done a lot cheaper by tomorrows technology

The space technology of today is not a neccessary step to tomorrows space technology

WTF have we gotten out of the space lab or the moon landing and now we are planning to fly to mars

If you want to explore the unknown explore the oceans

I've never had a problem with these two days...Might have something to do with my third overrated item: A Life. Probably explains alot though.
