Is there a way to obtain another key for a padlock? I've got an old padlock on a shed and the key is long missing. The lock has a number on it.

Is there a way to get a replacement key?

It's cheaper to buy a pair of bolt cutters. Then you can use it again and again, whenever you lose keys to padlocks.

The number may or may not be code for the key cuts, however, a locksmith will not (should not) cut a code key with you merely bringing in the number and lock brand(for obvious reason). That means a service call for them to come to your home and survery the situation. If it is a code, they will likely charge you $10 to $20 to cut a key by code, plus, in this case, a service call.
There are other tricks that they can often use to produce a key, called impressioning, but agai, would be costly , I've seen my buddy work on a lock for an hour or more to get a key by impressioning.
Borrowing a pair of bolt cutters and a new padlock sounds a lot cheaper

Most combination padlocks open easy this way and are less secure than those with a key.

As a matter of fact it was a tip passed on while working in management from a superior after training many years ago. He said it saves time from having to get bolt cutters.....

Similar story: When you can't find the padlock key after you've backed the truck into the loading dock (and there's a coupla dozen trucks waiting for your place when you're done) then the boss who knew the trick seems like the wisest man ever born. Used it more than once since; wanna lose a key, hand it to me.

And the locks are still useable.

I think all the baggage handlers at all airports all over the world know this trick as well.
