He's on Linux now. Maybe he got knocked offline just like TERB did?
They were 'upgrades'......;)
TERB didn't get knocked offline, they were just upgrading.
There's still a couple tweaks left, like fixing going to the last post of each thread. When you click on the last post in the right-hand column right next to 'replies', you still go to the first post instead of the last post.

Ok!! Here I am. Got distracted as I have to care for my ailing aged mother.

I have installed Ubuntu onto my desktop successfully!! I am in it right now and have some time today to play with it. So far I have noticed it loads WAY faster than windows. And I did not lose windows! I used that Wubu or Wubi thing. Worked well. Took about half hour. Going to check hard drive to see what happened. By the way thanks for getting my thread back! I will report back soon.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Hope she gets better.

Glad to hear you have Ubuntu up and running.
Enjoy. You are on your way to becoming M$ & Mac FREE....:)

Thanks Woodpeckr. Appreciate the sentiments.

Looking forward to this Quick preliminary question though. The printing on ubuntu is very small. Should I change the screen resolution or is there a better way of doing this -- that is making the imaging bigger? Thanks.

Changing the screen resolution is easy

You have several choices depending on what you prefer.

From the top go to, System > Preferences > Display:

From Display drop-down, click on Resolution box showing your 'rate' and select another resolution from those listed as you prefer. When you decide on one you prefer hit 'apply' and that new setting will be applied.

Also check your 'refresh rate'.
Sometimes Ubuntu chooses 60 Hz as default, which can cause eye strain.
If you are preset at 60 Hz move the refresh rate up to 70, 72 or 75 Hz to remove any annoying monitor flicker.

Hahaha

The other thing is to always keep an eye here .... weekly if not daily security updates and warnings ......
http://www.ubuntu.com/usn

They all have their issues ... some fixed sooner then later.

Very funny canucklehead!....:D

As you do all your updates that come, sometimes daily, this is all taken care of automatically with Linux!

I am on week 4 of my MacBook Pro. Its wonderful. I know very little about the inner workings of computers and don't want to spend my time learning even the simplest of actions (even just partitioning harddrives or running a dual core or whatever it is) or setting up anything. I just want to open the lid and get on with it as a user, and the Mac is providing that effortless experience in a way my Toshiba Satellite Pro, an otherwise fine machine that served me well enough for 5 years, never did.

If you are computer-oriented or enjoy delving into such things (and have the time for it), then likely the ubuntu or linux is worth looking into. Certainly the OP seems to be enjoying himself on that journey. But if you just want to run your applications and not be bothered with the "hiccups" of owning a PC, the Mac is highly recommended. I love the touch pad, especially, the dashboard, the battery life, the speed, etc.

No, their PRICES are bigger than they should be!.....:D

Perhaps a little competition from Psystar will force Apple to finally drop Mac prices.

One thing you never posted is Canonical's outrageous corporate support contracts or their plan to be more like Red Hat.
There will be Ubuntu and Freebuntu .... like Red Hat and Fedora... Open Solaris and Solaris.
There will always be a free version which is leading edge community supported and then a stable paid version with paid support.

This is one of things Linus goes on about in his last interview....

I love and use Linux as servers at work and my personal environment for testing and media centres ..... but the hate on you have for a Nix u have never used .... well that is pure troll like.... at least be honest and show both sides of the coin.
I know for a fact that Apple is not the cheapest ... but it works out of the box... u plug in and it goes... I have developers that have only used Linux or Windows ... but are blown away that CVS and SVN and so many dev tools are already in the system and do not need to be compiled or downloaded.
Apple suffers pretty much all the security issues BSD does .... so how many BSD viruses are there? Oh yes the hardware hack that allowed a MacBook to be compromised was the same on all Windows machines with the same wireless card.... and was never found in the wild nor was it ever able ot be repeated but was an actual security whole found in the firmware.... Linux OSX ... Windows were all able ot be compromised .... but still if the User was not su or in Sudoer file it really did not matter ...
The trolling is funny with nothing really being said that is no marketing material...
From one that knows they are all the same ... each has their own online support and community ... i get Linux fixes from both BSD and Mac Forums and vice versa.... the free Linux part is funny as it took 2 or 3 days for some one here to get online with free linux.... that would have cost me 2000 dollars or so .... if it was work a lot more ... for example we had been using for 14 monthes the same server config from HP ..... we ordered the exact same thing we always ordered and low and behold we could not install Ubuntu .... why?? the firmware on the board was rev b1 ... for starters and took a while .... the other thing the RAID card had changed ... this took a few days and much money... i had to grab a server from another role... re purpose and deploy it ... the the new one got Winblows and put into the replacements servers role and caused about 12 hrs of inconvenience for myself my team ..... and some performance issues from that cluster...
Anyways blah blah blah ...... there is only one thing that is free that is good ... well two .... and one is beer .... the other is why we are all here

That's because I have no need whatsoever of that.
My message goes out to mainly home users who are sick and tired of being ripped off every couple years by BOTH M$ & Apple!

They just want to turn on their PC and safely surf worry free.
This is what Linux offers and it won't cost them a penny.

Business and corporate users are a whole different ball of wax.....;)

Free is good .... always .... but there are battles to be fought and as far as evangelists of technology go good on you really.... but as a home user ... buy a laptop that works out of the box ... or buy a laptop that works out of the box.... and then go home and reinstall an os and hope it all works.
Apple is the worlds largest desktop Nix deployment .... why it works out of the box.... Hey damn i can do all the Darwin updates and even use ports or fink as my package managers and run the latest versions of everything.... but i pay the 29 upgrade or 99 dollar upgrade for software every few years ... why because it just works. AT home 1 hr less fighting with my computer I will pay the 99 bucks for something that works. If you do not value your free time as much as me well.... kudos... then you must have more then me. You said in a post before it took you some time but once you figured it all out it was easy.... again i just want it to work.
Now Snow Leopard will not support PPC ... why well most of the PPC stuff is old pre OSX carbon frameworks and APIs .
The first Intels came out in 2006.... OSX had been around for 5 years at that time ..... and OS9 compatibility was kept running for 8 years until now... now we are just talking software .... but hardware as well.
Now MS on the other hand ... snap how long has XP been around..... Windows 7 will be the first true working OS since XP... or was that Vista or ME??
They all have their ups and downs ... myself i prefer convenience and my time. Plus i work all day on computers ... i just want my home computer to work.... for myself and my kids.

Hey you get what you pay for .... Apple has been number 1 in consumers reports for build and support quality since 2006 until now.... oh and not by a few points but by 27 % more for desktops and 23 % more for laptops.... it is like every other product on the market there are different levels of quality ... cars TV cell phones ..... everything.
Sure Presidents choice Ketchup is 1 or 2 less then Heinz .... it is just Ketchup .... but it has 200 % less sodium .... :p

It's been said here before by myself and others - if you have oodles of time worth zilch then by all means go ahead and use Linux. If you want something that just works then go with OS X.

Some people can go on and on about Linux being "free" but as has been pointed out already you can simply get a Mac and then download free applications that are either Linux or OS X based.

Oh get real!

What? You don't use OpenOffice on Linux? Got news for you - there's OpenOffice for Mac OS X!

Why don't you stop spreading your FUD around? Again, anything that you can do on Linux for free, you can do the same on OS X. Plain and simple.
