WEENEN, South Africa (AP) -- Milton Mbhele showed up for his wedding Saturday in a white limousine - with four brides.

Mbhele, 44, a municipal manager in nearby Indaka, said the joint celebration would save money by combining the festivities. A traditional ceremony was planned for Sunday and there is to be a traditional exchange of gifts between the groom and his wives' families on Monday.

Mbhele has already been married to Thobile Vilakazi for 12 years and has 11 children, but did not specify who their mothers are.

"I want her to be happy," he said of Vilakazi, who was also given a golden wristwatch at Saturday's ceremony. "I think getting married to her for the second time would make her happy since I will be taking in three other wives so this will relieve her in some way."

His "middle wives" - as he described them - are Zanele Langa and Happiness Mdlolo, both 24.

The youngest wife, 23-year-old Smangele Cele, said she was looking forward to marrying Mbhele, even though it means she'll have to share him. She said the wives planned to live separately, with their husband rotating between them.

But these aren't 14, 15 year olds but 3 are 24 and 23 years old. They aren't being forced in to the marriage I am guessing. Maybe they are thrilled they are finally finding husband.

You take some guys like say in Saudi, they must think us guys are fuck over here in North America...having to share the roads with female drivers, even answering to some (like a female police officer). Maybe we are compare to them but then what is more important, being the "boss" or human rights for all?

You don't have to go that far, it's right here in Toronto as well. A few of our newly arrived muslim immigrants are here with multiple wives and they are all entitled to welfare. We must accept their multiple partners because that is a cultural thing that we must accommodate (god only knows why). Each adult is entitled to welfare because that is our rules regardless of how many people are collecting it in one household.
Sometimes I think we are too stupid for our own good. At least in Bountiful, they are all self reliant.

I have had the pleasure of traveling in SA for two and a half months. I met a man named Diji who had 5 wives aged 20 to 44. Each had there dwelling they kept with their children.

After spending some time with him he asked why I have only taken one wife and would I be interested in his eldest daughter to start a second family. I respectfully declined.

Yes, I read an article a few years ago where this newspaper interviewed several of their neighbours. They all said nice people, mind their own business, don't bother anybody, keep their word and pay their bills in full and on time. I could use a few neighbours like that.

In the famous words of then Justice Minister John Turner when he tabled a bill to decriminalize homosexuality: "We might find their lifestyle repugnant but we shouldn't criminalize it." I think society's main concerns about polygamy is whether the ladies were underage and whether they willingly agreed to the arrangement.
