Anybody used those self-serve checkouts seen at Canadian Tire and Loblaws? How do they work? Do you weigh your own bananas?

I use them often, I like them a lot. You walk up to the self check out and scan your items yourself and press a button to conclude the event you insert your credit/debit card or cash into the machine. The machine prints out your reciept and you bag your items and walk away. Old geezers do not like to use these machines as I have seen many timeswhen there were big lines at the regular check out counters and and none at the sef check out. Yes, it does weigh your bananas, if you have fruit or veggies you press a button for produc and then the button for the specific produceand it will weigh it and charge accordingly. Can you cheat the system? It would be hard as each item is weighed as it is checked out ad there are cameras with item recognition systems checking the size and volume of the item as you check it out.

There are 2 general kinds of self-serve checkouts.

The larger grocery stores have the better ones, imo. These are the ones where you scan your items and place them on a moving conveyer belt, and the items end in a bin/bagging area. Any produce must be weighed before placing it on the conveyer belt.

The (presumably) cheaper kind has no conveyer belt, so after you scan, you place them in the bagging area. The bagging area has a metal plate on the bottom which acts as a weight sensor. This weight sensor, ime, is a royal pain in the ass.

First, this area is too small if you have many and/or large items. And, the machine complains if you take the items off the sensor.

I was in Future Shop the other day and saw some great buns. (The lady smacked me when I squeezed them to though)

The advantage ....

I'm doing the work, not a cashier...
is not being stuck in the checkout line behind the mouth breather with 2 price checks, 37 coupons and a credit card that won't scan!:p

I like the idea of keeping people employed, it's bad enough I'm expected to bag my own groceries now.
I refuse to go to stores that make me leave a quarter deposit on their cart as well, they're annoying.

You're not EXPECTED to, you can CHOOSE to use self checkout.

Some people will complain about everything, even having wider options available.

but you don't see any of their carts trashed in vacant lot or drainage ditches either.

Who's complaining there's a choice? I just gave my preference and the reason for it.
Why does it bother you that I have an opinion? Some people complain about anything it seems.

La la land
less than 10

I only use them if I have more than 7 to 10 item which will vary by size.
I rather use the check out girl.
Several times I timed myself with the check out girl next to the machine and she was way faster.

It's those cheap machines with sensor that slow me down big time.

way out in left field
This time, I'm laughing with you. Good one.

Only at the food store, if the line ups are long and my items are few, out the door in < 5 minutes.
That's the beauty of self checkout......I think only once in the past year have i had to wait to checkout at stores with self-checkout. Every other time (in the hundreds) I'm through almost as fast as I can walk through......they are god's gift to guys who hate shopping.....

As for brill: if you're so worried about keeping jobs, factory automation must be driving you bonkers!!!
