I met someone who enjoys tequila.

Can anyone give me pointers on the best tequila to enjoy. I am such a novice (other than knowing it lowers my inhibitions.)

Thanks a million.

It's different for everyone. Once you've worked your way through the availability here, you need to move southwards to expand your appreciation.

Best of luck - it's a tough row to hoe. (but someone has to do it).

Here, there and everywhere.
I was recently taken to a great little bar in the west end Bloor/Ossington area that specializes in tequila. Great place. Great Tequila. Can't remember the name off hand but a great place to temp your taste buds.

Body shot

A body shot requires a partner. This person should be a willing participant.

Your partner holds a lime wedge between his or her teeth, with the juice side facing outward.
Pour salt on an exposed part of your partner's body (in public this is often done on the stomach, neck, chest, etc.).
Lick the salt off the body part, shoot the tequila, then suck the lime from your partner's mouth.

make sure it's made from 100% pure agave.

anything else can have the Mexican equivalent of rubbing alcohol added to it.

it's said if you drink only 100% pure agave tequilla, you will never get a hangover from it.

Try the tequila with Clamato. Either mixed in (tequila ceasar; also goes by another name which escapes me at the moment ... skip the worcestershire sauce and the tabasco), or as a clamato chaser.

BLOODY MARIA

But put a pepperchinni and celery in it along with a dash of dried peppers

From Wikipedia:

There are two basic categories of tequila: mixtos and 100% agave. Mixtos use up to 49% of other sugars in the fermentation process, with agave taking up the remainder. Mixtos use both glucose and fructose sugars.

With 100% agave tequila, blanco or plata is harsher with the bold flavors of the distilled agave up front, while reposado and añejo are smoother, subtler, and more complex. As with other spirits that are aged in casks, tequila takes on the flavors of the wood, while the harshness of the alcohol mellows. The major flavor distinction with 100% agave tequila is the base ingredient, which is more vegetal than grain spirits (and often more complex).

Tequila is usually bottled in one of five categories:

Blanco ("white") or plata ("silver") – white spirit, un-aged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation, or aged less than two months in oak barrels;

Joven ("young") or oro ("gold") – is the result of blending Silver Tequila with Reposado and/or Añejo and/or extra Añejo Tequila;

Reposado ("rested") – aged a minimum of two months, but less than a year in oak barrels;

Añejo ("aged" or "vintage") – aged a minimum of one year, but less than 3 years in oak barrels;

Extra Añejo ("extra aged" or "ultra aged") – aged a minimum of three years in oak barrels. This category was established in March 2006.

Great explanation. I love tequila, and the only rule I follow is it has to be 100% pure agave. Don't be mislead by the brands - most Jose Cuervo is not 100% pure agave and really sucks when compared to the pure stuff.
Price does not determine anything. I like a very inexpensive brand called Cinco de Mayo - pure agave and has all the different ages, about $15 a bottle. Patron is wonderful stuff but its over $50 a bottle. Don Julio is wonderful too.
Try all the different ages as shots. You will find the flavors vary but are all good. If what you are drinking is pure agave you should be able to swirl the shot in your mouth without it being too strong. Use the blanco for mixed drinks unless the recipe calls specifically for a different age.
I find Tequila to give a hallucogenic buzz and also to be a true aphrodesiac.

Patron Silver or Don Julio. Both good, but not cheap. I don't drink it at home. But when I'm out and having shooters, tequila is my shot of choice.
