off the top of my head, here are some others to consider:

John Tavares
Nikita Filatov
Tyler Myers
Victor Hedman
Cody Hodgson
Ville Leino
Jonas Gustavsson
Evander Kane

if hodgson makes the team, it will be only for the fact that the nhl has a stupid rule that, due to his age, he is too young to play in the ahl. he has looked absolutely terrible out there. if you've watched all the canucks pre-season games like i have, shirokov would be the rookie to pick from the canucks. another 2 points tonight. i think he has like 9 points in 4 games. shirokov will likely be starting the season with kesler and samuelsson and get a ton of pp time.

I agree... though I heard on HNIC that Hodgson's agent said he will demand a trade if they send him back to jr.

not exactly good timing to be picky. imo, he belongs in the OHL and may perhaps never become an nhler.

btw- Canucks did a good job retooling to remain contenders in the west. of all the canadian teams, they are the strongest, imo. yes- I do catch there games. my brother is a die hard canucklehead and i have to be up to speed with them to make any kind of small talk with him at any time of year... haha.

Is Shirokov a top prospect, or a mid-level prospect pulling a Brandon Bochenski (sp?) from the Sens about four yeras ago now, who also had a huge training camp and went nowhere quickly after that.

i'm sure the canucks will accommodate that trade if some team is willing to part with 3 first rounders and a top prospect. :)

hodgson has no one else to blame but himself so far. luckily for him yannick hansen broke his hand last night and pavol demitra is out indefinitely leaving a space for hodgson to get his 9 game tryout. shirokov and tanner glass have outplayed hodgson by a country mile so far.

shirokov is 23. he's decent at both ends of the ice. everything he does on the ice is just so right. there's a major lovefest for him in vancouver right now. they all want him to play with the sedins but he will likely start the season beside kesler and samuelsson. those 3 looked amazing together. he's a safe 40 point pool pick but his potential is so much more.

I agree. He needs to weather his game to NHL in-season play first, but there are always 'pre-season stars' that never pan out. Shirikov looks like he will prove to be an NHLer though.

Ins't Stalberg a rookie??...

...with the camp that he had..and the way he played in his 1st regular season game,I'd say he should be in the conversation...

yeah, I said in another thread that I think Stahlberg and Leino will be the 2 top contenders for Calder. Filatov might be in the top 3 also... but who knows? some of these guys will get demoted to either back to jr. or to the AHL... and there will be other call ups as the season progresses.

I'll go with Matt Duchene of the Avalanche!
Good call dude, I'd have to say he's the front runner. I love how no one else on this thread gave him any respect. Tonight he showed why he should be named ROY, he scored the winner in shootout that clinched a playoff berth for the Avs. A great roof shot over Luongo's blocker. This kid reminds me of a young Joe Sakic, maybe not as talented but as poised at Joe was at that age. With him, Paul Stastny, Chris Stewart, Ryan Stoa, Kevin Shattenkirk, Peter Mueller, Ryan O'Reilly and goalie Craig Anderson, the future looks pretty bright in Denver. I wish I could say the same for the Leafs.

Thanks KD! I would say that Duchene & Tyler Myers are the front runners. Myers has played wayyyyy more minutes than any other rookie.

Matt Duchene also reminds me a bit of Joe Sakic. Duchene grew up idolizing Sakic & had his bedroom covered in Avs posters. etc His dream growing up was to play for Colorado. And he could have played for Team Canada this past tourny at the World Juniors!

Not sure about Duchene, this Tyler Myers kid is a pleasant surprise, a diamond in the rough in an otherwise mediocre Sabres team (except goalie Miller). As a defenseman, so far he has 11 goals, 36 assists, a plus rating of 15, putting most of his veteran teammates to shame. He and Miller are the cornerstones for the Sabres to build on.
