It has been about 4 months since I had my prostate surgery and my original posting about it; https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=65673&highlight=prostate+problems , here is the follow-up.

The surgery went resonably well but----the recovery was the nightmare from hell.
Keep in mind that this is just my experience, other people I have talked to had a very easy time of it with a quick recovery. I was released from the hospital after about 3 days, slightly uncomfortable but otherwise O.K. After a couple of days I started getting bladder spasms-----excruciating bladder spasms. They were so bad they would put me on my knees and bring tears to my eyes. Thank goodness they only lasted about 15 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. I would get these about 6 times a day and as near as I can figure they were caused by the catheter that I had in. I was supposed to have the catheter about 3 to 4 weeks but thankfully something happened to the catheter and it fell out on its own after about 2 1/2 weeks. The catheter is inflated at the end and that is supposed to keep it in but somehow it lost its inflation and thats what caused it to come out. After losing this I felt great, I was preparing to go back to work after another week when I started feeling more pain in the surgery area. I awoke in the middle of Sunday night in excruciating pain again, so bad that I had to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. My testicles were as big as baseballs. It turned out that I had gotten an infection. The pain was unbelievable, worse than the bladder spasms, and I was put on morphine to get some relief. I stayed in the hospital for another 3 days and went on antibiotics for 2 months (at $6.00 per pill and no coverage). They figure the infection was caused by the bladder spasms and the loss of the catheter because every time I had a spasm, urine would leak past the catheter and into the urethra which was not healed yet. Anyways the swelling took almost 2 months to go away.
Today I am feeling pretty good. I have my urine under control so I am no longer wearing diapers. The only residual effect is impotence which was expected and may last up to a year. However, I have talked to some people who took 2 years to get back to normal and others who never have.
My main regret is I really miss the hobby. A couple of weeks back I went to see secret touch in Hamilton to see if she could work some magic but alas it was to no avail. Despite her best efforts Cathy could not do the impossible. To her credit though, she did give me a good discount due to my lack of ability to perform, which was very generous of her, because she did work very hard to try and make it work. I have tried viagra and cialis but thay did not have any effect. I may be premature in thinking I can get things going again, maybe it is too soon, but I sure do miss the ladies.

Wow, great post r2d2. Best wishes and hope everything works out for you and thanks for reminding us all about the realities of life.

And, as a further reminder to all of the guys over 40 out there - get regular yearly checkups and learn how to do testicular self examinations. Until there's a cure for cancer, the best ways to avoid problems are early detection of cancer and by leading a healthy lifestyle.

I lost my godfather to prostate cancer. If you are over 40, please get this checked regularly during your annual physical.

GOOD FOR YOU. It's very brave of you to post all of this. I am sure no matter how bad it was, or is still to this day. It's still worth being on this side of heaven for now!

take care!

Ask the doc for the prostaglandin shots. They are by far the most effective and believe it or not the least intrusive.
Sorry to hear you had such a hard time after your surgery.

By making this post I am hoping to reach as many men as possible and alert them to the importance of having a PSA test done during their regular yearly physical. As I have stated already, start the PSA at 50 unless there is a history of prostate cancer in your family then start the PSA at 40.

prostaglandin

My Urologist, who also runs a mens clinic, suggested I try prostagalndin for my impotence problem created by prostate surgery. He said it may also help me get over my impotence a little faster. I decided to give it a try. Prostaglandin is administered by injection directly into your penis. This is not a problem as you are given instructions by the doctor. There are a number of different injections you can use, my doctor recommended a triple mix because it uses a very small dose and has the least side effects. It takes about 10 minutes to achieve an erection after the injection and it lasts about 1 hour. My erection is not nearly as big as it used to be and the injection causes my penis to bend at an odd angle making sex in certain positions difficult i.e. missionary. The only other problems I have experienced is a bit of discomfort giving the injection and also my penis is sore during and after the erection. It is rather embarassing giving yourself an injection before sex and I am not sure what some sp"s mike think if you were to whip out a needle and say "just hang on a minute will you". It is better than nothing though and you do achieve orgasm as well. On thing is for sure, I really miss the ladies.
You can go on site to check out prostaglandin.
