Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet financed a nationwide sports gambling ring in which about a dozen current NHL players placed bets, authorities said Tuesday.
Tocchet, a former NHL star, was served with a criminal complaint Monday and was expected to travel from his Arizona home to answer charges of promoting gambling, money laundering and conspiracy, state police Col. Rick Fuentes said.
If it turns out that hockey games were among those events that were bet on, this will be Bettman`s worst nightmare. He`ll be wishing for the days when Dick Pound`s steroid accusations were the league`s biggest scandal.

I agree with you. What will be more devastating is when we find out who the other dozen or so "current players" are.

And what will the league do to them if hockey was bet on.

The authorities...

...are going out of there way to make it clear that NOBODY involved bet on hockey...

"Tocchet, a former NHL star, was served with a criminal complaint Monday and was expected to travel from his Arizona home to answer charges of promoting gambling, money laundering and conspiracy, state police Col. Rick Fuentes said.

Fuentes said an investigation into the New Jersey-based ring discovered the processing of more than 1,000 wagers, exceeding $1.7 million, on professional and college sports, mostly football and basketball. He declined to identify the NHL players who made wagers, but said none bet on hockey."

This isn't even CLOSE to a Pete Rose type situation.

Frankly, I think it is really hypocritical the way the government makes gambling illegal - unless they get their cut (lotteries, etc.). In so long as a guy doesn't bet his own sport - or associate with those who do (which might be the kicker), I fail to see the problem. Yes, I guy could get up to his ass in gambling debt and then be "beholding" to someone - but that could happen if he "gambles" on real estate or the stock market.

Beyond the fact that it is illegal (but so is speeding) I don't see what the issue is.

I think that being charged with financing an illegal gambling ring could be more dangerous to Tocchet than placing a few bets on some games.

gretzky looked stumped by the question, that's for sure... he's got a bad poker face!

though gretz denied his wife having involvement at first, he then backpeddled his way to saying he doesn't know and he feels for both tochet and janet...

i feel for wayne... it's been a really tough last 6 months for him.

This is how much Americans know about hockey and this story for that matter - when it broke Bob Schieffer the anchor for CBS Evening News called Rick Tocchet, wait for it, Richard "Tay-she-yet" - not "Talk-et" like it's pronounced but "Tay-she-yet". You'd think SOMEONE at CBS News would have known how to pronounce his name properly. And the picture they had up for Janet Gretzky (they called her "Janet Jones of Missouri" she hasn't lived in Missouri for 30 years) was a publicity shot from Police Academy 5 back in 1988??? Yikes!

Boring topic, too much energy and hype.

Big freaking yawn.

$100 says that they all walk at the end of this dramedy.

200-1 that Janet blows me next Friday at 2pm and gives birth 9 months later through her purdy mouth

50-1 that Wayne gets upset and blows me too

3-1 that Tocchet finds out and pounds me

Anyone wanna bet on Team Canada? Gretz gots the book...

Damn I miss Tocchet in the pool, Granato too!

The story of bored rich people

...Thast's what part of this comes down to....I mean, how many times can Janet have her nails, hair and face done, buy new clothes, and go prance around the gym??....she's bored out of her mind, what, with the nannies raising the kids and hubby rarely home.....so she takes a few hundred G's from the Gretzky/Jones multimillion dollar fortune (putting as much of a dent into it as the average slug taking a G note to Vegas for a week). Of course, the mistake is to bet it with the slimey bookie who's racket has ties to a crime family.

....and this does not look great for the NFL either....makes you wonder about the horrible calls in last weeks Super Bowl...do you really know for sure if the fix was in on that game???

G

GlavaMan

She is now being referred to as Janet Betsky! :p

In the 80's, before Wayne, she had a 3yr engagement to tennis player Vitas Gerulaitis. Vitas had a serious 'nasal problem'.

...most of the betting is alleged to be on Football, the alleged Tocchett betting ring has a crime connection....some of the calls in the Super Bowl were the worst I have ever seen in professional sports...a stretch to say the dots definitely connect, but food for thought....
