China is now banning all Canadian meat products. I would ban much more than huawei products.

As a bit of a gadget geek, the moment one of my devices begins to act up, I get excited about the possibility of replacing it. My wife, in contrast, is more willing to let something fall apart from overuse before upgrading to something new. But this week, even she had to admit her smartphone was on its last legs. We headed into the local shop of our wireless provider to look at replacements, and right by the front door was a huge display of Huawei phones.

And I mean huge. It was impossible to miss, positioned right in front of the main entrance, with glossy posters showing happy people wiling the hours away on their Huawei phones and tablets. It’s all part of the Chinese telecom company’s strong push for sales in Canada. You had to walk around it to get into the store. Subtle, it was not.

It set my teeth on edge. And that was before China tried to blow up our agricultural sector.

On Tuesday evening, the news broke that China was banning meat imports from Canada. China says it detected a banned substance in Canadian pork, and discovered paperwork irregularities when it investigated. It would be a lot easier to take that oh-so-reasonable-sounding explanation seriously if China were not applying strong political pressure on Canada over the matter of Meng Wanzhou. Meng is a well-connected Chinese national and Huawei executive who was detained by Canada after we received a lawful extradition request from the United States, which has charged Meng was fraud relating to alleged efforts to skirt sanctions imposed on Iran. She is out on bail, pending a resolution of the extradition request. China is … displeased.

China is arresting our citizens and explicitly targeting our economy

It seems almost unnecessary to recap here how China has responded thus far. It’s been a major news story for months. But alongside increasingly terse diplomatic warnings, China also arrested two Canadian citizens on questionable charges, re-sentenced a Canadian previously convicted of drug-related charges to death, and has clamped down on exports of Canadian canola to China. The latest salvo against our farmers has to be viewed in that context. Even if there was truth to China’s claim of contamination and bogus papers — I’m not buying it, but even if — their suspension of imports has to be seen as part of this broader context. Beijing is leaning on us.

Fair enough. We’re in a fight. Can we start acting like it now?

Seriously. I refer you back to the above. China is arresting our citizens and explicitly targeting our economy. Meanwhile, if your phone breaks and you mosey on into a store to replace it, you’ll be dazzled by the massive Huawei displays. There’s an opportunity here. Huawei is closely tied to the Chinese government. It’s also symbolic of China’s economic aspirations. Want to strike back at China? Target Huawei.

That should include a consumer boycott. Martin Patriquin, writing in these pages four months ago, already made that call to arms. “Those put off by China’s treatment of Canadian citizens in the wake of Meng Wanzhou’s arrest,” he wrote then, “should register their ire by not buying Huawei products. Huawei, the direct beneficiary of China’s thuggery, deserves neither our eyeballs nor our business.” He was right then; he’s even more right now.

Blame Trudeau for creating this mess.
Canada does not know what this is about, and that is why it is helpless.

Of course Canada is the weaker party here, but that is not the real problem.

The real problem is the Canadian government is no match for the political skills of the Communist Party of China. That's why the Chinese always claim we have been around for thousands and thousands of years, blah blah blah.

On one hand, China is abusing Canada in front of the world, with no letting up. China has made Canada the whipping boy, do not cross us, you will not like it. This is publicized everyday almost and the abuse ratchets up always. Compounding the problem is no ambassadors for either country in the other country. China wants to continue this abuse as long as possible.

This really works in China's favour because this strikes at the heart of the western alliance. No one has stepped up the defend Canada. The USA under Trump has it own problems with China, do not expect any help there. The more China whips the whipping boy, the less inclined others will speak out about it. This is a real show of power politics, which Canada was totally unprepared to be on the receiving end. That is where we are at now.

Trudeau is caught.

1. He has no friends, only able to muster perfunctory lip service from western countries in support.

2. He has no ambassadors, so no avenue to diffuse the situation, allowing China to escalate at will, which it will do.

3. On the other hand, China still making real deals inside Canada, which limits Trudeau's range of actions. Note that these deals are under-publicized. The Chinese ministry of propaganda wants it that way. The most important thing is two fold for China, to get Meng Wanzhou back and to whip Canada as much as possible in front of the world. That no one dares to say anything speaks volumes of the western world. That is what China wants.

That is politics in Canada. Trudeau is an idiot because he volunteered to be the whipping boy. Sheer, is even more hopeless, as his main criticism of Trudeau is that Trudeau did not volunteer fast enough to be whipping boy.

Canada, never had a chance!

Announce that Canada is planning to re-establish official diplomatic relations with the Republic of China. Oh, yeah. Relocate Meng from her mansion to a regular detention center. Give her a cavity search as a welcome.

It's time the Canadian government started doing something. Anything.

The Chinese (as far as I'm aware) have a trade surplus with Canada.

It's time to return the favor.

1. Start with cracking down on Chinese criminality in Canada such as money laundering. Have the RCMP start an investigation into illegal foreign activity in Canada, specifically targeting Chinese nationals.

2. Start slowing down the entire visa process for Chinese nationals wanting to come to Canada.

3. Reduce the numbers of Chinese students in Canada and take a fine tooth comb to those already here. (There's far too many anyway in our colleges and universities and they are reducing the number of spots available to Canadians.)

4. Stop the bullshit and ban Huawei already.

5. Target Chinese agricultural imports. That nice white garlic comes to mind right off the bat.

Unfortunately Canada stuck it's nose where it didn't belong and we are now going to pay the price. I lay most of the blame on Trudeau for listening to Dotard down south and some of the blame on our political system and on trying to appease the Americans, there is no doubt had it been any other Canadian leader they would have done the same thing as the PM Trudeau (exept Chretien)

I said it in another thread and saying it again Trudeau should have never listened to the American's and should never have arrested Meng Wanzhou, no other country would have arrested her for the Americans. We should have simply told Trump and the Americans to fuck off.
It's not a secret that this was an attempt by the U.S.A with false fraud charges to derail the 5G program of Huawei as china is expected to profit $500B from this technology and the American companies are far behind Huawei. It's unreal the Huawei technology and products are so far ahead of it's competitors, the Huawei p20 is so far better than all the other products out there.

Trudeau can still get out of this, he can end the extradition of Meng Wanzhou to the U.S based on national interest.

I agree, this is really the biggest political mistake Trudeau has made.

Let me get this straight. We sell off all of our high tech jobs and productive capacity to the Banks and China. Arrest the equivalent of Chinese Royalty on baseless charges completely usurping International Law. China has cut off and recalled it's Ambassador to Canada. And now you want to boycott Huawei further pushing on a string against what is the largest productive economy in the World as well as soon to be the largest consumer economy in the World.

What does America and Canada have to offer China that they can't get from Russia and India and the rest of Asia ? Maple syrup ? Canada once had a position of soft power in the World. We no longer have that. Perhaps we should try Diplomacy ? Or are we incapable of that as well ? I guess we could offer to send them our Gay Pride Parade floats and some pot.

Yeah, we'll show the PRC who's boss. While we're at it let's ban tourists from China. We need more empty hotel rooms for the Trudeau refugees and illegals.

Trudeau created this mess and now he’s begging the Americans to intervene on our behalf especially regarding the two Canadians being held in China. He screwed up royally and wants the US to fix everything.

I actually agree with darts and Conil for once. Enough is enough...ban Huawei and boycott anything from China- I’m sure we can find other low cost developing countries to manufacture shit for using child labour and paying 50 cents per day...at least they can be trusted not to rip off our intellectual property and kidnap our citizens.

China doesn't care about Canada, as its trade with it is puny compared to its worldwide trade.

It's time to return the favor.

1. Start with cracking down on Chinese criminality in Canada such as money laundering. Have the RCMP start an investigation into illegal foreign activity in Canada, specifically targeting Chinese nationals.
China would be grateful if Canada arrested and extradited people who embezzled local Chinese government coffers or Chinese corporations and then fled to Canada inflating the Vancouver real estate market. Should Canada extradite them back to China or simply let them go scott free just because you don't like China? That requires cooperation. Answer that, Sherlock!

2. Start slowing down the entire visa process for Chinese nationals wanting to come to Canada.
Yeah, and screw the Canadian tourist industry out of 300,000 Chinese tourists who spend loads of money here..... For China, a drop in the bucket as 130 million Chinese travel abroad.

3. Reduce the numbers of Chinese students in Canada and take a fine tooth comb to those already here. (There's far too many anyway in our colleges and universities and they are reducing the number of spots available to Canadians.)
And throw half a dozen Canadian universities into insolvency, as Chinese and other foreign students pay 4 times the normal tuition.

4. Stop the bullshit and ban Huawei already.
And let Canada lag 3 years in 5G.

And replace it with US suppliers, guaranteeing that the NSA will listen to everything you say or type through their own backdoors (they even tapped into Merkel's smartphone). Why would China want a backdoor in Huawei equipment.... to sell you more stuff?

5. Target Chinese agricultural imports. That nice white garlic comes to mind right off the bat.
A drop in the bucket for China, as the value of their trade with Canada is puny compared with their worldwide trade. China does not need Canada.

An example of some people, including Trudeau and his clowns running the circus, that have no sense of proportion. Canada is not even a middle power, like the UK or France. It is a pipsqueak, riding on the coat-tails of the US.

The same US that continuously screws Canada on trade in the form of tariffs and who's corporate funded NGO's lobby to block pipeline construction towards the Pacific, and who managed to get the idiots running Ottawa to ban tanker traffic on the west cost. That means that there is no competition for Alberta oil and there is only one captive market, the US, that is getting it way cheaper than on the world market. Why do you imagine that Alberta is furious at Trudeau and his circus?

What about the huge tariffs imposed on the Bombardier C Series sale to Delta Airlines, effectively blocking the sale, and forcing Bombardier to sell the whole division to Airbus rubbing its hands in glee, eliminating competition and reaping huge tech benefits?

People are so keen on kissing America's ass, that they bite the hand that feeds them (China providing competition for our resources and exports).

The arrest of Meng was a monumental blunder, that will affect the Canadian economy for years: by reducing trade and lowering prices and profits for Canadian exporters.

When Mulroney and Chretien pair up and request Meng's release, you know that there are deep concerns in the Canadian establishment, corporate and other.

Trudeau and his clowns fucket up royally and the only thing preventing them from fixing it is that they don't want to lose face.... something that's supposed to be an Oriental trait, not Canadian

Questions: Why don't we have any Canadian indigenous companies that can compete with Huawei? Would Nortel and RIM have been able to build 5G?

Huawei ploughs 50 billion dollars of its annual revenues into research and development. That's why they're not only no1 in 5G, but 3 years ahead if everybody else (that's why the US wants them blacklisted, for corporate competition).

Canada cannot compete in that market. 5G is not some gadget you can build overnight.
