Not a Trump fan, but I don't think Trump was the bad guy here. Further I think he had a valid strategy that could have worked, but wasn't given enough time.
The detaining of refugees is covered by law, HLS/ICE were following those laws. I also believe it's true that xx% of the children were not directly related to the adults and were used as a tool to gain access to the US. Therefore they must be separated IMO. However if it's proved they are related, they should not be separated.
Illegal immigration is a big problem and needs to be dealt with. I believe Trump was taking the tough guy approach: "if you come illegally, we'll lock you up immediately and likely send you back - don't test us". I'm okay with that. But politically motivated people started to blow the situation out of proportion and the political pressure became overwhelming. Trump capitulated and IMO, the US will pay a price. I believe the tough guy approach was the right approach - with the exception that proven families should be kept together. I'll bet allot of potential immigrants were beginning to think twice about trying to cross.
I realize many of these people just want a safer life with some hope for prosperity. But the US can't just let anyone in. It sucks, but it's reality.
