Levi Strauss teams up with gun control group: ‘We simply cannot stand by silently’

American denim giant Levi Strauss & Co. announced Tuesday that it is launching a series of new initiatives to benefit groups working to prevent gun violence.

Levi Strauss's CEO and President Chip Bergh wrote in Fortune on Tuesday that the company "simply cannot stand by silently when it comes to issues that threaten the very fabric of the communities where we live and work."

"You may wonder why a company that doesn't manufacture or sell guns is wading into this issue, but for us, it's simple," Bergh wrote. "Americans shouldn't have to live in fear of gun violence. It's an issue that affects all of us - all generations and all walks of life."

Bergh said it was his responsibility to speak up for important issues since he leads a "values-drive company that's known the world over as a pioneer of the American West and one of the great symbols of American freedom."

He added that he is not advocating to repeal the 2nd Amendment nor calling gun owners irresponsible.

"We can't insulate ourselves from every threat," Bergh wrote. "We can't 'harden' every place we gather - whether it be our schools, workplaces, shops, churches, or entertainment venues. But we can take common-sense, measurable steps - like criminal background checks on all gun sales - that will save lives."

Levi's, therefore, announced a new three-tiered initiative to support gun violence prevention.

The company will donate more than $1 million over the next four years to nonprofits and youth activists that work to end gun violence, establishing the "Safer Tomorrow Fund."

The blue jean manufacturer also partnered with gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety and other executives to form Everytown Business Leaders for Gun Safety.

Bergh called the group a coalition of business leaders who "believe, as we do, that business has a critical role to play in and a moral obligation to do something about the gun violence epidemic in this country."

Levi's will also double all donations made by their employees to the Safer Tomorrow Fund.

Bergh acknowledged that the decision to advocate for gun control is a controversial one.

"While taking a stand can be unpopular with some, doing nothing is no longer an option," he wrote.

Oh nooooooo!!! Pretty soon the Trumptards are gonna have nothing left to wear...and NOBODY wants to see that ugly site!!!!!!!

Trump supporters that have a daily burning routine. First Crosses, then Nikes and now Levis:

According to Sacha Baron Cohen (Who is America), Trump supporters wear fake vaginas. I couldn't stop laughing.

LOL! First nike sneakers, now their Dad jeans.

Maybe Trump followers should adopt a Lululemon Unitard as their uniform of choice (with sensible Keds), given that Chip Wilson was an asshole and likely a Trump type (although WAY more successful in business than Trump).

As long as enough do it, there will be safety in numbers. That is always the most important factor for sheep-like Trump supporters. And they could get a volume discount on a custom bulk order of XXXL.

Both Levi and Nike have all the right in the world to get behind any 'cause' they wish. I just think it would be better done privately, as you risk alienating, or separating themselves from thousands, maybe millions of consumers when you take any political stance publicly. Dick’s Sporting Goods took a stance by stepping away from assault style guns, and though they say now that isn't the reason why, stocks tumbled and sales are way down.
Gun sales have been down since the election. Why? Because the best reason to buy a gun is when a Democrat is in office and the spectre of bans comes up. Eg: Remington filed Chapter 11 in March - hit by the double whammy of slow sales as well as possible court rulings related to Sandy Hook. Cerberus Capital tried to sell the company but there were no buyers - so it filed Chapt 11. So Dick's decision had no relation to its performance (which has actually been pretty good for 2018 -after hitting low in Oct - up over 35% off the low. Better inventory control, better marketing, new e-commerce initiatives...). Well above the knee-jerk drop that happened after they announced their AR sale ban in March. The same thing will happen with Nike.

Agree 100%.

Its true sales are down since the election, and its like you said, owners are comfortable with the current administration.
Democrats are very good for gun sales, its a fact.
Far be it from me to taint the logic that gun owners are arming themselves for protection against the current administration - but - do you think if your blew a few of those rose petals of logic away you may find a fear of administrations that could be receptive to gun controls ie: Democrats ?

I love my Levi's
I used to love levi's many years ago when I thought it represented America with its freedom etc. When Trump was elected and it become painfully obvious how stupid the real America is, wearing levi's is somehow not fun anymore.

Time for Trump supporters to start taking their suppositories.

The only problem there is that most of them are so stupid, they try to take them orally.

Hmm, it is only conservatives and or Trump supporters who do things like this?

Wow is that selective memory or what!

You guys are being too negative and hard on the poor, sheep-like Trump followers. Focus on the positives - most are remembering to remove their Levis before burning. And some are even remembering to put on a spare pair of pants afterwards.

I think they all deserve a sticker or a lolly.
