Great idea, this is pretty cool. First I've seen of it, and not ridiculously priced either.

Ya the teacher in my High School had two fingers missing....Winston said:In high school, the wood working teacher always did a safety demo on the first day of school, no matter what the grade.
Well, one year, while doing the demonstration of the wrong way, he cut off 3 fingers.
It only takes a moment of distraction.

He taught me how to use power tools...and the most important step was the run through without the power tool on. It was like a practice run sort of...and I can't tell you how many virtual fingers I would have lost!
You go through the actions whith hands placed the way you're going to do the "action"...remember is's not the hand holding the saw that gets cut...it's the ones thats supposed to out of the way..or the power cord...
With table Saws...he preached about the guard being on ALL the time. In my home shop I was building some furniture...and a piece of wood during cutting slowed becasue of a dulling blade...and the saw threw it backwards at about 90 MPH....I eventually called the marks on the piece distressing to make it look antigue!
Bottom line...follow the book that comes with the machine...KEEP THE GUARDS ON! You see tradesmen all the time working without the guards..but if the guards are set up properly..and thats the key...then they'll work just fine no matter what the job is. All these guys who talk about guards getting in the way...they all have friends missing digits!
The guard is thre for a reason. If you're an occasional user/hobbyist in woddworking..use all the protection you can get.
Just like this forum says over and over...would you have sex without a condom? Keep the guards on every digit![/QUOTE]
Mark it all sounds good on paper. Every close call I've had has been because of the guards and the fucking dust collector okay I confess and lack of sleep.
Here's why...for one you lose sight of the blade while the gaurd is on and gain a false sense of security. As you know the guard doesn't gaurantee you won't cut yourself.
Secondly after the blade has been sharpened a couple of times the kerf is marginally smaller than the splitter (part of the guard) which causes the wood to jam on the splitter before it reaches the anti-kickback mechanism. Try and get yourself out of that mess when you are ripping a 4x8 and the power button is 6' away.
Anyway I don't mean to jump on you, I'm old school and learned very safe practices and habits before the guard was introduced. I would agree for the weekend warrior the guard should always be in place.
I forgot to add...you cannot rip 2" and under while the guard is on because there is no room for the push stick...ah ha!! just kidding
I just noticed that tboy beat me to it.
I'm in the market for a portable, what do you think of the Porter Cable @ $499?tboy said:Those delta, rigid and mastercrap should be outlawed. The fences etc are so wobbly that they are accidents waiting to happen.
