Why are there so many sex assaults at York University? Do they have much more than their fair share of attractive females? Do sex assaults happen as often at other universities but are simply not reported:( giving the false impression that they are safer than York? Anybody here goes to York?

Do you have stats on this or is it your perception based on how the Toronto press loves to dramatize their reporting? I'm not convinced York is any worst than Waterloo, London, etc... until I see the stats.

Bingo. My first year at york there was a whole series of assaults by this guy they caught from Jane and Finch (which the campus borders on one side with a couple of residence buildings right there. A lot of dangerous people right next to a real easy target.

Sexual assaults have nothing to do with the apparent beauty of the victim. That line of reasoning implies responsibility on the part of the victim.

they go unreported. When I went to Queen's a roomate of mine was sexually assaulted in our home while I was away for xmas holidays and it was in the paper as a burglary.

Of course I can only comment on the one but it seemed their policy at least at that time was to keep it hush hush. I was involved with the local police in trying to assist that fellow's capture so it was very ''close to home''. They never did catch him that I'm aware of.

From Steeles and Keele to Black Creek / Sentinel near Finch. The Campus is just a stolen bike ride away from the worst suburban hood in Toronto.

I wonder if sexual assaults/harassment by teachers are as prevalent in university as they are in high school and grade school.

Also, I think the definition of sexual assault/harassment now is much broader than when I went to university.

Let's also remember that false allegations are all too common. If video didn't exist of the consensual sex they had with the woman, these guys would be fucked over.

One has to wonder how many claims of assault/harassment are real or fiction.

Wow!! That is a terrible story, that woman should face serious charges and be put away for at least 3-5 years!!!

According to the Toronto Star, the worst corner in the City is Dundas/Sherbourne. Ryerson is pretty close to that corner, how safe is Ryerson?

Amber-jade, you have not said enough and are obviously ignorant of the sexual assault convictions at York University. Those convicted are not the locals, they seem to be fellow students, support staff, workers on campus etc. The criminals on campus are people who for whatever reasons blend in and do not attract attention. York is conducive to sexual assaults because of its open spaces and relatively long walking distances between buildings, and its lack of campus life activity after hours, resulting in desolate areas. Many students live off campus and commute.

The atmosphere at and around York is sexually charged, with lots of pretty women enrolled in arts courses, not so much science courses and there are a few MPs offering EBC style services just off campus. A few part-time SPs have admitted that they go to York, more so than say University of Toronto or Waterloo etc. Any "Jane & Finch " locals would be targetted by campus security at York as soon as they stepped on campus for various reasons. .

Because York U attracts all the people who couldn't get into a good school like Western or Waterloo :p

York U has had what? 3 strikes in 10 years? And students still choose to go there?

I heard that York has a good MBA program but how is the rest of the school? I have always considered York to be a second tier university. I would consider UofT (and maybe Waterloo) a first tier university.

It's more a university thing. When I was at Western, there were more than a few, and I volunteered for security patrol a few nights, traveled in pairs, and escorted women who were walking around at night alone. Big campus, night time, big spaces... all it takes.

And I agree, it probably isn't locals. Although I don't think they'd stick out as much as many of you would think.
