Both XviD & DiVX are mpeg4 codecs. So if you have a dvd player that plays DIVX, such as the Philips 642, then it should also play XviDs.

lf not, I use TMPGenc Xpress for conversion.

VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod will do the conversion. Just google them for info.

Many of the players that claim to play DIVX won't play if they are encoded with QPEL (quarter pixel) or GMC.

You can find out if this is the case in a video file by testing it with Gspot or AVIcheck. (I know this is terb, but I'm not making gspot up).

See http://gspot.headbands.com and http://82.2.167.24/Uploaded_Files/Doom9_Forum_files/Avicheck_(v4.06.172.00).zip, or read the thread at http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-71373.html.
Chuck beat me to it, but yeah if you're dvd player is only playing the audio and not the video then the xvid avi must have been encoded with qpel.

I had the same problem so I just downloaded every codec imaginable and finally got it to work......There are a number of DIVX and XVID players out there as well.....
