I heard on the news that the original Sheik past away the other day.I used to laugh at his curly toed shoes. He had that manager with him. The guy with the wrap around shades and pez hat. I think his name was king Farruque or something.

This news has me waxing some nostalgia.

When I was a little snot my old man used to take me to see Maple Wrestling at the Gardens and the Hamilton Forum.
Plus I would watch it on CHCH sat. mornings on the black and white. I think the show was hosted by Lord Nelson or something similiar.

I have been drumming up some of the names from long ago.

The Love Brothers, The beast ( the hairly dude chewing on the shrunken skull), Andre the giant, Angelo "King Kong " Mosca and et al.

Well things have certainly changed since those days.
I am not so certain for the good. The language used now...
The degrading treatment of the women and implied sexual innuendo. Fun entertainment for adults but I do not let my kids watch it.

I used to really hate that Shiek as a kid as he always did in the good guys. He was a good showman... may he rest in peace.

You brought back some memories

I think the Sheiks' manager was the weasel? And the host was Lord Athol Layton? Testing the memory here real hard........I too used to love watching them on chch on Saturdays.

Behind You
Nostalgia

I remember once seeing 'Tex' Mackenzie taking on the Shiek. He lost of course. There was another wrestler from that era who weighed around 500lbs. He was quite popular but I can't remember his name.

Thanks for the memories Paul

When I first moved to Toronto I would take my young nieces and nephews to see wrestling at Maple Leaf Gardens. Paul, you and I are from the same wrestling era as I saw all of your list at one time or another. My favorite match was Andre the Giant vs Jake 'The Snake' Roberts. Andre was terrified of snakes and was hung up in the ropes with Damian the snake draped over him. This was shortly before his retirement and it was sad and awesome to look at the size of Andre, but it was very evident that he was in pain simply walking into the arena and he had people on either side of him as he climbed into the ring. But he entered through an archway that I had occasion to walk through some years later and he had do duck. The last time I was in the Gardens I stood in that archway and remembered the big man fondly.

Waldo von Erich
Iron Mike Steele
Abdullah the Butcher
Pompero Firpo
Mad Dog Vachon

I wish I could remember the names of the jabronis who were on and lost every single week! Those guys were worse than the team the globetrotters play.

AHHHHHHHH

Wrestling from the sixties.........that was when it was just pure fun and very little about being vulgar and repulsive.

Any body remember Duey Robertson or the Assassins.........remember how we all cheered and hoped that the opponent that week would rip off their masks...

Oh I am sounding old here.......waxing nostalgic.

P.S. The sheik had that dreaded Camel Clutch.

I MISS MR. WONDERFUL

Paul/IT said:
I'm not a big fan of todays wrestling.

But I do miss the good old days when I actually argued with my dad about wrestling being real.

Mad Dog Vachon
George "The Animal"Steele
Ricky The Dragon Steamboat
Mr Wonderful
Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Superfly Snuka
Rick Martel
J.Y.D
Dusty Rhodes
Andre The Giant
The old Ric Flair
And how can we forget "Pipers Pitt"
... and Ricky was my hero. I cried my eyes out when Macho Man took a the bell to Ricky's throat. Gimme a break man, I was a little kid -- and I thought it was real!

I read that George "The Animal" Steele was a genius. By the character he played in the ring, its very hard to believe. The harry b**tard played it well, though.

Rowdy Roddy Piper... I totally loved this guy... especially when he back-stabbed Hogan. I always looked forward to seeing who would be the next friend to turn on the Hulkster. Anyhow, has anyone seen the movies Piper had acted in? There was one that wasn't all that bad, it was called "They" -- if I remember correctly.

I don't watch the crap anymore. That was my trip down memory lane. Thanks, it was fun.

My favorite still is Nikolai Volkov.
HAHAHA -- "classic jobbers". I miss those guys! Was it Iron Mike Sharp that would pat himself on the back?

*laughing hysterically*

From Another Thread

Another thread wa started about Sheik's pasing by Raven, I posted to it, it quickly disapeared so i will repost my wrestling experience.
-------------------

In the mid seventies, I was a kid and had a part time job at varsity stadium and one night they had Ringside uner the stars. The stands and the feild was packed. I knew little about wrestling.

The late Lord Athelatin was there, Mr. Sato, and all the old greats.

I was selling "Ice Cold drinks" ,
when the Sheik came out one guy yelled at me , hey kid how much for the drink ? I yelled back 25 cents (the good ol days for 16 oz )
and he grabbed an orange pop from me, took off the lid and threw it at the Sheik as he walk by the fence to the ring, many spit big gobs at him , and he didnt flinch..just kept walking.

these were the days when everyone thought (except me) that wrestling was real . well Sheik went into the ring and within 2 minutes was disqualified for having foreign object with him, not for cutting open his oponents face.

so the mystique lived on because no one ever saw him for more than a few minutes at a time. man the good ol days .
Yes I say a prayer for The Original Sheik and commend him for not flinching when he was pelted with pop and gobs.

silence............................................................
...............................

My hat off to you Sheik , and dont bring any foreign objects up there.

Then there was The Beast , who was just waiting for full body electrolisis to be invented
