India's Tata Motors will launch its extra-cheap 10 feet (3 metres) long Nano car in Mumbai on Monday, selling for 100,000 rupees or $1,979 (£1,366).

The Nano does not have many of the extras featured on other cars


It will enable poorer citizens in developing countries to move to four wheels for the first time.

The four-door five-seater car has a 33bhp, 624cc engine at the rear. It has no airbags, air conditioning, radio, or power steering.

It may not be enough to revive Tata Motors - hit by debt and falling sales.

If it were legal here I would buy one in a heartbeat. The perfect thing for driving to the store or short little drives around town. It would be paid off in 6 months, and everything after that is gravy.

Honest to god I could see a big need for that type of car here.

It could be a perfect little commuter vehicle for short hops.
Looks like you could park it anywhere.
Same size as the Smart Car which costs $12K-$17K in the USA.

Doesn't look any worse that the goofy "Smart Car" I see some people still insist on taking on the DVP/404. Since the Smart Car costs 10 times more and looks about equally bad, maybe tata has a winner.
