Soccer/Football is the most popular sport in the world. That cannot be denied. But what was interesting to me is that China and India is not in this World Cup. I'm not sure if either country has ever been in any World Cup. Considering that they are the two most populous countries and have 1/3 of the world's population, I wonder what the deal is? I know cricket is the most popular sport in India but is soccer popular at all there? Lack of China is surprising considering a destitute North Korea, with like 3% of the Chinese population, can qualify over them.

India didn't enter the tournement and China didn't qualify for the final stages. It's a 2 year process to decide who qulaifies. Read all about the process at;

Come on Don, do a little research. I am not even a soccer fan and I spent five minutes and found this.
China, once in 2002 South Korea. Went 0-3, did not score. No better or worse then Canada.
India, as far as I can find, has never played in the Soccer World Cup.

You are focusing on the wrong point here. What my main point is not how they did but why they are hardly a blip on the soccor radar.

The sports "genius" aka Steve Simmons for the Toronto Sun took a shot at the WC with the exact same comment. I immediately fired off a very polite email explaining to the twit how qualifying happens. It takes 2 long years to qualify where you have to go through several games or rounds depending on region, also dont forget I believe the number one sport in India is cricket with soccer just behind. They did interestingly enough qualify for the 1950 tournament but withdrew after FIFA refused their request to play barefoot. For this tournament they were beaten by Lebanon in the 1st round of qualification and eliminated.

I answered the question you asked ... choose not to read between the lines, just looked at the obvious.

Main sport of India is Cricket. They do not have a national soccer league. Blame it on the British Raj

I too am surprised that neither India nor China can put together a quality football program. China is ranked 87 and India 133 in the world fifa rankings. By comparison, Canada is 63rd.
