World Cup Prostitution Mania vs. Facts

Almost every day I get reports of yet another group using the huge brothel nearby and portable min brothels at the world cup as an excuse to make a huge international issue about "trafficking" of poor children etc forced into prostitution. The German government has reported there is no evidence of any forced trafficking, but facts get in the way of the anti prostitution groups to make this a huge issue.

In the U.S. "trafficking" includes consenting adult prostitution not just forced prostitution which is defined as "extreme trafficking". So whenever you hear from the Bush Administration the word trafficking it includes private consenting adult sexwork unlike what the term implies to most folks (forced). "Exploitation" also refers to consenting adults choosing sexwork since officially all women who are in sexwork are exploited, there is no such thing in the Bush agenda for consenting adult private prostitution.

Yes I am sure some coerced trafficking may occurs, but its rare, illegal and blown out of proportion. Private consenting adult sexwork (at least outcall) is legal in almost all the world except the U.S. without significant negative issues. In Germany brothel workers are employees, covered by health care and pension plans. There are strict laws against children or forced prostitution just like in the U.S. But again they use the Word-cup as a platform to rally those against all forms of sexwork with terrible fears of children being forced into prostitution to get the emotional response they seek instead of facts about the vastly different kinds of sexwork most of which has none of the issue they rile against.

Just one example
Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute Launches Email Petition to Stop German World-Cup Prostitution
NEW YORK, June 16, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute has initiated a massive email campaign to enlist the support of concerned people around the world in opposing the sexual exploitation of women during the World Cup in Germany.

The German government has come under intense criticism for the country’s tacit promotion of prostitution during the World Cup games now underway in the country. In particular, human rights advocates have harshly condemned the importation of 40,000 sex trade workers, many of whom they say are trafficked. “These women come from desperately poor circumstances,” C-FAM said. “According to reports, most will not speak German. Most are being 'sex trafficked' against their wills. They are told that they are going to be models, waitresses, or some other harmless occupation. Many will be brutally assaulted by intoxicated fans.”

“Whatever their circumstances, each and every one of these young women is someone’s daughter, a child of god and deserves our protection! They do not deserve to be exploited and sentenced to a life of misery to satisfy the sexual appetites of soccer fans.” The pro-family advocacy organization is gathering signatures for an email petition to be sent to the German government.

The United States Department has issued its fifth annual Trafficking in Persons Report, along with the $82 million in anti-trafficking assistance our nation provided to foreign governments and non-government organizations last year, demonstrates our strong commitment to this cause. The TIP Report serves to expose these despicable aspects of trafficking. It provokes, lauds, and challenges. Countries including the United States, which is dealing with its own trafficking problem, have been inspired to greater action against human trafficking as a result of this unique compendium. By reading it, we hope you are joining with us in the abolitionist movement of the 21st century to advance freedom for the world's most vulnerable citizens." - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

The Real Story
Munich prostitution raid
Source: http://cbs.sportsline.com/worldcup/story/9494207 June 12 2006
A raid in Munich's red-light district found no signs of women forced into prostitution for the World Cup, although police said Monday they found significantly more prostitutes at work than usual. Officers raided 48 brothels and checked six streetwalking zones in the Bavarian capital on Saturday night, a day after the tournament opened.

A German man who had brought a 19-year-old Ukrainian woman to work at a brothel was briefly detained on suspicion of human trafficking. He was released after police found no evidence she had been forced into prostitution, spokesman Andreas Ruch said. Police found that "all the businesses that were checked had increased noticeably the number of prostitutes working for them during the World Cup," Ruch said, estimating the number of prostitutes working in Munich has risen to 800 from the usual 500. However, "the increase in guests that the red-light scene was hoping for so far has failed to appear," Ruch said.

Before the World Cup, anticipation of a sex-trade boom raised fears of an increase in forced prostitution, with an estimated 40,000 women from poorer Eastern European countries forecast to head to Germany for the tournament -- some possibly against their will. Already, the European Union estimates more than 100,000 women in Europe each year are forced into prostitution. (this kind of hysteria brings in lots of money to the organizations that make this such an overblown issue vs. women who choose to be sexworkers)

Prostitution is legal in Germany, with about 400,000 people registered in the trade.

Heaven, definately Heaven
I was in Bangkok 3 weeks ago and the "US" TV channel, HBO, showed a movie about this kid watching porn on the Internet and ruining his life. Well, it was such a laugh when the film finished, I went out and got laid. Quite happily, I might add!

That is really sad if intelligent people don't care how the negative view of sexwork gets reinforced by these anti sex groups that distort and lie for their own anti-sex agendas.

But self absorbed selfish people don't care about anyone else's view or how it hurts the public view of sexwork as long as they get their rocks off.

Today in Canada changes to bawdy and agency related (living of avails) laws need changing but the public image that so many sexworkers are trafficked (assume forced but not forced by the U.S. definition) hurts support just as much as the sexworker groups insisting on their right to be a public nuisance on the streets.

Of course in the U.S. its far worst since even outcall is illegal.

The Bush administration is saying to the German government to make all prostitution illegal - they like to dictate their views to others , and the excuse of how supposedly all these trafficked poor women are victims fuels the public image how terrible "prostitution" must be - ignorant of the huge difference between coerced trafficking vs a chosen profession that should be honored like it has been in past cultures.

I realize you prefer one sentance nonsense posts vs anything that strains ones brain cells to comprehend but some of us are committed and serious about the public view of sexwork which these types of outlandash statements about the horrors of forced prostitution that too many people actually believe vs the real facts that many wonderful women choose to be sexworkers as a legitimate occupation that benefits a society in my view.

Look Dave, most of these girls come from east-block countries where women are considered 2nd class citizens, the cops there are corrupt and so is the government.

Until countries like Russia, Ukraine etc. start adopting western values and giving equal rights to women, nothing will change.

So why get worked up about it???????

...June 16, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute has initiated a massive email campaign...
A recent Toronto Star article said the temporary roadside shelters were the project of SKF, a Catholic women's organization.
...a Cologne project that uses makeshift shelters where clients drive in and get serviced in their cars. SKF, the Catholic women's organization that runs the Cologne project, says it gives prostitutes better access to security and social services...

...the Catholic women running the Cologne "drive-in" project, insist criminalizing prostitution hurts more women than it helps.
"The more prostitution is out in the open, the better chance police have of getting it under control. It's when you clamp down on it that it goes into seedy places you can't reach," says SKF spokesperson Anne Rossenbach.
Lifesite "news" is opinion, not news.
Last year they ran that stupid story claiming that unemployed women in Germany lose unemployment benefits if they refuse to work in brothels. It was exposed as an urban legend, yet lifesite ran it again 3½ months later.

...Religious conservatives are opposed to all prostitution under any circumstances. They don't want to abolish sex slavery. They want to wipe out the whole sex trade. Everywhere...

...At the urging of the religious right, the Bush administration has embraced the anti-prostitution crusade...

...“But the issue has become thoroughly politicized. Activists and government officials have trumpeted phantom statistics and exploited anecdotal horror stories as evidence of a worldwide epidemic of coerced prostitution and to justify a campaign against all forms of commercial sex.”

There's only one word to describe a moral crusade that uses the suffering of innocents to advance an unrelated goal: immoral.

Oh where do I begin with this assinine statement? You do know there are more women engineers, lawyers, CEOs, CFOs. COOs, statesmen, doctors, managers, technicians, etc... on a ratio to men than there is here in the 'west'? And by a wide margin. Before you tell others to shut up, maybe you should yourself.

Don't mock! Watching porno as a kid ruined my life too. I've been pussy-obsessed since the age of 12. It's hell being ruined by porn.

400,000 people in Germany registered as prostitutes? The entire country is about 100,000,000 people. That means 0.4% of the population are prostitutes. That's as many as in any other legit occupation group.

Now we know the real reason McBride got an elbow to the face from the Italians. Good. I'm with the Italians for the Cup! Anyone supporting the USA in the World Cup? You know, no Bo Jackson on this US team. No Mia Hamster, either!

Dave you write well, but please watch the stereotypes.
The Catholic church IS NOT ANTI-SEX!
In fact, it continues to encourage her members to have more babies, get them baptized, ect....
The church is against sex-out of maraige.
Prostitution falls into this catagory.
The church has reasonable grounds for its policy. It may seem old fashoined, but that's the way it is.
And if all else fails..I can go to conffession!

Yes, but they also make priests be celibate - a joke since it of course attracts gays since only men can be priests

The idea of Catholic celibacy is especially foolish when you realize the reason behind it. Before the middle ages it was allowable for Catholic priests to have multiple wives and mistresses (concubines). But with concerns for protecting Church property from inheritance Pope Pelagius I made new priests agree offspring could not inherit Church property. Pope Gregory then declared all sons of priests illegitimate (only sons since lowly daughters could inherit anyway in society).

In 1022 Pope Benedict VIII banned marriages and mistresses for priests and in 1139 Pope Innocent II voided all marriages of priests and all new priests had to divorce their wives. This had nothing to do with morality, multiple women for males had long been the norm since before biblical times, but it was about MONEY! In biblical times many wives, concubines and breeders was common and never spoken against other than by Paul to the Elders of Timothy and Titus. In the Tanakh, Jewish priests suggest 4 wives was probably about the right number.

The whole celibacy nonsense was also the result of middle age gnostic influences that false taught that the body was dirty and not spiritual and to be more spiritual you had to avoid natural sexuality. Talk about getting people really screwed up!

Lessons from a German Brothel
John Turley-Ewart, National Post
Published: Friday, July 07, 2006
...Condoleezza Rice, the U.S. Secretary of State, claims the policy offers an open invitation to criminal gangs that exploit vulnerable women. And according to the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives panel on human rights, Republican Christopher Smith, "the clear losers [in the World Cup] will be the thousands of women and children trafficked and sold into Germany's legal sex industry to accommodate the huge influx of [potential clients]." His fears were echoed by widely circulated claims that 40,000 women from Eastern Europe were going to be smuggled into the country for just such a purpose...

...the Equal Opportunity Ombudsman for Sweden, unsuccessfully called on his country's soccer team to boycott the World Cup over the issue. (In Sweden, buying sex is a criminal act. But selling it has been decriminalized...)

...But as the World Cup draws to a close this Sunday, it is clear that Germany's critics got it wrong. According to a report released on Tuesday by the International Organization for Migration, there is no basis in the claim that thousands of women from Eastern Europe were frogmarched into the pleasure trade for the benefit of randy soccer fans. Indeed, business at many brothels has reportedly been quite flat.

The assumption underlying much of the bad press Germany has received is that decriminalization is a boon to the underworld. In fact, the opposite is closer to the truth. Prostitution is like any other industry. Make it illegal, and you give criminals a monopoly. Legalize it, and you give law-abiding enterprises a chance to compete...
