Just an FYI that applications for tickets to World Cup Football - Germany 2006 are now being taken.

http://www.fifaworldcup.com

The way it works is you send in your application online, or via fax or snailmail. In a month or so they randomly choose applications and fulfill the orders.

It's damned expensive in the later rounds (quarterfinals onward) but the Group Matches and Round of 16 are affordable enough particularly if you get the cheap seats. I was toying with the idea of buying 2 tickets to 4 games (quarter, one semi, the 3rd place and the finals) in the #1 price range. Came out to over 3000 Euros! ($4800 Canadian). I think I have to decide how badly I really want to go to World Cup! I might still go for a few group matches though then come back and watch the rest on TV.

Already got mine.....

I've already got my tickets to the FIFA World Cup......it helps to work for a company involved in the planning of the event.

I know eh!!!! It's sad really!!!
Americans in the 70's and 80's wouldnt even show the WC on TV until it was the final game, and the only reason that was on because it was usually played on sunday night.
If it had been on during monday night football it never would have been on at all.

In the corner
I was at 6 games in 1966 and 6 in 1994. Aazing experiences, especially seeing your country win.

I always remember the yanks wanting to get up and get drinks every 10 minutes, we told them to sit still and enjoy the action!!

HUH??????????????.....How many Stanley Cup finals do you know of that happen to fall on a sunday??????????

The Stanley Cup final is a 7 game series....not a 1 game event/match.

But for basetball fans.....the NCAA bball final is played on a Monday night.

You can bet your dollars that this will change.
I was involved in coaching youth in Chicago and Dallas. The amount of kids that play soccer is astonishing, all the way up to College/University. Sooner or later there will be a breakthrough on the higher levels as well.

The US national team has done pretty well in the last two world cups. Once they make it in to the semis or finals, they will get a lot more attention.
The fact that hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic gropu in the USA will do it's share too.

True and a lot of inner-city kids are taking up the game.
Its cheap to play and doesnt require any special equipment

DeMarcus Beasley is example of that

OK people in case you didnt understand what I meant

I know Stanley cups are 7 games (duh!!!) but if the final game of the Stanley cup happened to fall in the same timeslot as the World cup final the americans would have shown hockey instead of soccer IMO
At least in the 70's and 80's

When the kids become teenagers, they normally lose interest in the game. Why?
I think it is because they don't have any clubs or idols they can follow on TV. Why?

Because it is not possible to stop a soccer game for commercials; Therefore the networks will never bring the soccer games.

I disagree, you can use a split-screen during soccer games.
It's only during the World Cup that ads are not allowed

I agree at the grass roots and even semi pro level there has been great strides made over the last 10 years but North American pro soccer will never reach the popularity of the other major sports in North America (Football Basketball, Baseball). One of the main reasons why is because the professional soccer league is not as strong financially or deep talent wise compared to many South American or European leagues. Several attemps were made in the past and have all failed for the same reason. You can't have a successful team sport at the professional level in the US without a national TV contract. Look at the mess the NHL is going through right now....and their TV ratings are lower than bowling, tennis, figure skating and even poker (YIKES).
